Re: a good affordable laser b/w printer

Not sure if you have purchased one or not. But if it helps, I have a Samsung SCX-4300 (3-in-1)
I've had it for almost a year maybe. Pretty good printer. Decent speeds (18/19ppm). I like the 3-in-1 feature...(being able to photocopy without turning on the PC)... Scanner is ok..I don't use it much, but if I'm not mistaken, I recall reading reviews about it (before I purchased it) that it's not the best out there (color reproduction etc), but does the job.

As for the toner, the original costs $80. There are compatible ones for around $60. Refilling is possible (aroudn $30/$35 if I'm not mistaken), but had to spend hours and hours researching to successfully use the refilled toner.

Here's the deal...money-hungry samsung (as all companies) have found yet another way to screw consumers; not sure how other printers work, but this one has a chip on the toner that monitors how many papers you have printed...The toner "should"  last you around 2,000 papers. The toner level does not measure actual (or approximate) toner remaining, but uses the print count to see how much you have printed, and how much more you "should" be able to print.

How does that affect us? It's only logical that the toner lasts based on how much toner you have used, and not on how many papers you print. (Printing full A4 pictures uses more toner than a sentence of text.)

As far as I know, ink/toner level are never accurate. But on this printer; it starts giving you 'toner empty' when you reach the (allowed) page count. After a while, it gives you "toner exhausted" and refuses to print/photocopy anymore. It doesn't matter how much toner you still have. It doesn't matter if the toner is still full. You just can't print anymore. Thus, the problem with refilling is that, even when the toner is completely full, you still get "toner exhausted" and cannot print.

There's a (fairly) easy way to solve this. (well, easy to implement, but sure as hell wasn't easy to find)... It just needs a simple firmware crack...and either remove the chip on the toner or (what I did) stick a piece of scotch tape on it (so the sensor on the printer can't read the chip anymore). If anyone needs more help on that (cracking the firmware), let me know :)

PS: Just to give you an idea; it gave me "toner exhausted" and stopped printing a few months back. I cracked the firmware and stuck a piece of scotch tape on the toner. It has printed around 700 papers since (and still is printing) on that same (supposedly) "exhausted" toner!
