Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Hi guys
Do you want to have more advanced tools than Ogero/other ISPs technicians have(at current moment) to find out your problem and help your buddies in Lebanon?
If your line is problematic, and we analyze together stats we might be able to find common reasons of DSL degradation.

We need to manage to run this :)

Also please check this might be handy as well, it is different purpose, to log your data change over time.
It is if you have UPS for modem and PC and can run them 24h at least to collect all data

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

I've been running Router Stats for like 2-3 months now... It helped me figure out if I had any local issues interfering with my connection.

Although the problem I always had at night is still there with a really low SNR.. couldn't find anything local causing it.

What is the first link for?

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

It is DMT tool that can provide detailed stats for frequency bins. If you can post here when its good and when it's bad maybe we can guess what might be reason.

I have the tp-link td-w8961d but I got an error on DMT error: can not identify modemtype

I suspect some revisions are not supported. As tool very old i might have to write my own in future, if on new modems same diagnostic interface present.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Are there any tools of this kind for the TP-Link VR900 (or any of the other modems in the Archer series).
I remember trying DMT and RouterStats but both do not work since shell access is blocked in all Archer series modems or something of this sort (haven't read much about the topic).

The reason I am asking is that ever since I have been switched to VDSL, my CRC and HEC errors have skyrocketed (probably due to the higher frequency and hence higher interference with the electricity wires downstairs). So I wanted a tool to inspect the errors throughout the day instead of constantly keep checking the modem page.

EDIT: The modem does not even show the type of errors in the stats page (FEC, CRC, or HEC). In order to do that, I downloaded a tool/code called StatPoster.

Latest version didn't work with my TG582n. The V7 did though.

Will update you with what find.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Especially interesting to see bin stats at morning and evening, if you have problems with speed drops at specific time of day.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

For some reason I can get it to connected, but it isn't showing any information regarding the connection. Tried tweaking the settings and such with no success.

I can provide the info from routerstats though, bitloading and such with a log of my SNR for the previous 2 months or so.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

yes, thats very interesting, bitloading especially. I am trying to find out why many people have degradation of speed at evening, not sure it will give clear answer, but might give at least some ideas.
I hope it wont be my worst expectations, that reason lays in some fundamental for ADSL things.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

http://prntscr.com/gds599

This is the worst my SNR reaches at night 7.4... then it starts to go up from 3AM and upwards to 10snr and it reaches around 17-18 mid day.

This is bits/tone: http://prntscr.com/gds8ef

This is bitswap/time: http://prntscr.com/gds8j3

Honestly it used to be much worse a few months ago with the modem constantly resyncing.. so it's at least stable now. I'm on 2mb unlimited and my lane supports 4mb according to the tool the ogero technician used.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Sharp drop of SNR just in few minutes?
(Or i suspect modem resynced on different speed)

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Sharp drop in a matter of a few seconds actually.
And nope sync speed is still the same and can be seen at the top 2042 kbps.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

I gave up on this subject, technically i was trying to collect statistical info to get picture, what is most common case of speed drops, instability issues and etc.
My attempts to reach Ogero and help them to improve stuff gets only reaction that i can describe: "why this guy put his nose in our stuff, we are fine with headphones".
Most probably they are facing fundamental issues of DSL that is affecting all people speed.
Even if you will get any advanced stats and reasoning, on other side you will face deaf guy, who wont even understand you and not interested to understand.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

I am doing since beginning, and i respect him and his efforts, but he is not technical, so he redirect me to other guys, and as soon as i reach anyone else, i am getting polite GTFO.
As it reach deaf ear i will publish what was my idea.
There is devices exist, us/eu vendors cost $4000+, but russians did their own R&D and selling it approx $800 retail. Device looks like this:
6a64607f.jpg
It can do diagnostics like this for example
eef509ff.jpg
, so you can know what kind of interference problem customer experiencing.
But what is important it has this:
OBtfJke.png
This diagram can show distance to multiple faults on the cable (broken insulation, bad connection on "joint", short circuit, broken cable, wet joint) ,but sure it needs some skills on interpreting it, or... can be automated.
Because, more important it has USB and documented protocol.
So basically engineer on centrale connect this device to customer line, press few buttons, and report about line sent to customer support within minutes. So they can know if there is any issue on centrale, or on line. And if there is necessity they send team to customer premises that will tell EXACTLY where is issue, with solid proof and numbers, and not wasting HUGE amount of time on blind guessing.

Holy crap. This is actually genius and it saves so much time. Maybe that's the reason they didn't want to pick it up. Instead of doing 20 jobs a day a team can slack off and do less work. Or maybe you were talking to one of his advisers who doesn't want anyone taking credit for something he didn't suggest. Just ask for a scheduled meeting or something and tell him the truth about being told to gtfo politely. What a shame. We will never become a decent country.

Re: Troubleshooting DSL like a boss

Well, probably knocking to closed doors approx since May worn out my patience :) At least for now.
I will take a break and concentrate on projects that bring me money or at least some that i see clear future (IoT), but if i will see situation changed i will try again.
Maybe even will do some R&D and try to make my own tester (at least cable faults), within $100-$150, it looks feasible to cut some features and try.

This one let turn on/off interleaving and change noise margin online, over website.
Most probably i was not heard too :)
