never tried it... but Firebug works fine for me!

They should work together.
It tells you the problems you have in the html code you're generating.
Firebug tells you how the browser interprets your code.
Orthogonal tools, and I use them together.

If I'm not mistaken, Firebug has a validator (unless it is 'Web developer', another addon I use)
