Your display picture, is that a photo of that happy lebanese family of singers from the 60ies?
I saw something like that on youtube a while ago.

You mean the Bandaly family (one of whom was the famous Rémi Bandaly, a childhood crush of mine)?
The ones singing "Do you love me, do you do you"?

Nope, this isn't one of them. This is from a virtual collection of vintage photos and posters that I have. Plenty to have fun with.

I like photography... but I'm not a photographer. I just "take pictures." But all this stuff about lenses and f-stops and aperture... it flies over my head!

And yeah, Facebook sucks. I mean I appreciate it from a geek's point of view... the way it's built and how it makes money through various applications...
I guess I like Facebook, but I hate the way people use it. Especially here in Lebanon, spending all day logged in and looking at other people's updates and photos.

Hey Bassem, welcome aboard! I agree with you about the face book sucks argument, I hate it too and rarely use it. It's a big waste of time. Lebgeeks is much more fun and useful, at least you find people who are like you  Hope to see you around, have fun and enjoy your stay :)

Yep, Bandaly Family
(do you love me?.. etc.)

@Ayman, facebook is good for events and being contacte by old friends or people who only know your name. Because of that, it does NOT suck, there are people I met through facebook, and events I attemded thanks to facebook.

It also has some value for artists to spread their work.

Then it has minimal entertainment value (funny videos)

As for the obsessive status updates, no thanks. As for the showing off, I have conflicting feelings. Some people seem to like showing off, posting photos so that the world can see where they are and how lucky they are, on the other hand, it is nice to see that a friend is having a good time.

I think the nice thing about facebook, and which made it succeed over hi5, friendster and other attempts, is that it lets you fine tune privacy and information feeds to suit your needs.

That's what I hate most  Actually another thing I hate about it how many people are addicted to it. For example, some day you rush into the computer lab and have an assignment to finalize and present the same day. You enter the lab and you see all the PCs occupied with people doing nothing but opening face book, some playing those stupid games, others commenting on photos, and others just reading news feeds of their friends and browsing the photos. For me, it has been useful for finding old friends who I lost contact with ages ago, other than that it is just a waste of band width and time :)

That's what Facebook was made for, and it's very good at it.

I see your point, but it's become extreme. Facebook has become The Internet in Lebanon. I emailed a friend a week ago, and I ask her today, didn't you read my email? And she says huh? I didn't get any messages. Turns out she doesn't even bother checking her email anymore. She assumed I sent her a Facebook message.

There are plenty of specialised websites for things such as art promotion, checking out fun stuff, or sharing photos. What I mean is, this is keeping people around here from learning a bit and becoming more experienced with the WWW.

One thing I do love about Facebook (and pretty much the only reason I log in) is the Marketplace. I've sold and bought quite a few things through there. Very useful.

Totally agree with you on the status and photo addicts. No wonder it's such a big hit in Lebanon: it suits the "check me out" and "did you check him/her out" mentalities very well.

Once you use DSLR cams you will never go back to the shitty compact ones. I owned an Olympus E-410 , this year i got the the Olympus E-620 ! awesome cams !

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! I got here from Google Wave. Someone mentioned LebGeeks over there.

Samer, looks like you did a full search on me. I'd say that's creepy, but, I tend to do this too. ;)

GN90, a DSLR would be wasted on me. But I'd like to get prosumer camera, something like the Sony DSC-R1. Fixed lens with integrated wide-angle. Manual focus. That's enough for me.

WOW that's an old cam ! sony stopped this series ages ago . it is the same for all manufactures except for canon who still have the G series, i think lumix will soon stop their LX series since they have entered the micro four-thids market along with olympus
These are high quality compacts .
if you don't have a cam i can recommend for you the ultra zoom series such as the HX1 (20X zoom) SP-590 (26X zoom) or the SX20 (20X zoom). all are 28mm wide except the sp-590 26mm wide.

Re: There are other geeks in Lebanon? *happy tears*

GN90, thanks for the info... Micro four-thirds is a pretty smart technology. However, I'm sure I wouldn't have any use for a camera I can't keep in my pocket / bag at all times.

I'd love to get the newly released Canon S90. Small, sexy, manual control ring, video, shoots in RAW (!?!!)

Right now I have a Samsung S860, got it for 100$ at BHV which I thought was a good price. Simple cam, lovely image and most importantly (to me) it's very fast to switch on and snap a photo.

And when I don't have that, I use my phone.
There's a saying I believe, "the best camera in the world is the one you have with you right now."

If I were rich enough I'd get the lovely Leica X1...

Leica cams are just not for us. they cost so much cause if the name and the prestige and of course quality . i won't go to the LX1 but for the M-9, fixed lens create limit, i prefer interchangeable ones
I've tried the E-p1 and they results where amazing, i even got better shots that then my E-620 at iso 1600 cause Olympus did change their software .
canon S90 would be awesome ! small with G series sensor but don't get too exited on manual ring control cause it won't feel nice on small cams.

yeah samsung shit stuff  they are good in TV's but cams  i would go for Nikon, Canon or Olympus and newly some lumix but not that much
nikkor, canon and olympus lenses are awesome of course if you want to compare them to leica ones you need to choose the top of the range cause leica doesn't have commercial stuff

oh im a cam super geek

I had the opposite reaction. (and btw i know about f-stop, aperture and all that). I dont think ill buy a DSLR. The photos look amazing but its just too bulky to carry around, and I like to have a camera on me most of the time, because you never know when you will want to take a photo of something, right? So I'd probably end up taking most photos with my cell phone camera, like now. Which is not so bad!

The only thing that annoys me about small cameras is how bad they manage in low light.

But I saw some newer DSLR take video too, so that may make me reconsider.

Also samer's photos make me want to buy a cheap manual 35mm, and go around making photo sessions with that....
But I'm still waiting to know what film he uses. I'm sure Kodak Gold processed at the corner photo shop would not yield this result, unless he processes it in photoshop afterwards. Besides the operators in theses photo shop have the habit of changing the photo parameters, messing with your colors...

@GN90, I was interested in fujifilm cameras, for a while, they have tried different techonologies, and their cameras go up to 1600 iso or even 3200 sometimes.
I like Canon colors too, and Nikon DSLR colors. I dont like Lumix :) they are not designed from a photographer's point of view: unresponsive operation, low light sensitivity and not-so-great colors (IMHO)

Re: There are other geeks in Lebanon? *happy tears*

video in DSLR is not a fancy thing, no auto focus ability in video mode and you can hear the manual ring sound (zoom or focus ring)
the reason i hate compact cams is low light as you said  it is a physical limit it cannot be evaded. Sony is trying a new sensor tech (exemor) fudji has its own senors for that (EXR i think) and canon is reducing the MP of the sensor (SD90 and G11 will use new 10MP sensor for low light) but none of these cams reached the qaulity of the SLR is iso.
i hate to use flash so iso performance is so important to me, plus shutter lag and af acquisition and af reability is frustrating in compact. i can turn on the cam and take a sudden picture while you are still turning on the cam .
The only way to replace SLR's is to build cams with large sensors such as the micro four thirds or sigma DP series or the new Leica X1 it has an APS-C sensor !! but these cams cannot replace the SLR speed.
