Actually firefox puts a global limit on the number of simultaneous connections you can use.

I have the habit of openine lots of tabs, and there were these forums were i'd go, and i'd check out the thread list and open in the background one tab for every thread that i liked. I'd end up with 10 tabs worth of loading threads. And every time i'd do this, the browsing would get down to a crawl. Like i'd launch google and it just... would not load.

So i started doing lots of fancy stuff such as examining squid logs, and then i finally came to the conclusion that the problem has to be from firefox, because if i did exactly the same in ie, browsing would still work properly.

Actually these forums - i dont know why - caused firefox to open several persistent connections per page, and to quickly reach the number of maximum allowed connections, which is pretty low by default.

So I changed these settings... and now i dont have this problem anymore.

If you want to do it, go to "about:config" in firefox and change these settings:
network.http.max-connections
network.http.max-connections-per-server
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server
