Why all you guys say Tripoli is not suitable for this ???? It is the second biggest city in tripoli, and The cable is here so how they will demonstrate it if there is no connection to beirut yet. So please people be patient and for sure beirut will have first the increased internet speed with tripoli.

Demonstrating in Beirut will bring more people than in Tripoli. That's just logic.

Yes you are right 1000000%, but the infrastructure is not ready in Beirut neither in Tripoli. So they will demonstrate the capability in place. That is why it is here in tripoli.

I think Ahmad_k is misunderstanding the word "demonstration." They will not be demonstrating in the sense that they will turn on the cable and show it's capabilities. What is intended here is a call for people to demonstrate (i.e. a public display of group feelings toward a person or cause) to pressure the politicians and the people in charge that we really shouldn't have to wait for years to take advantage of this already existing infrastructure. Because of this, I think Beirut would make more sense because the intended "audience" are the politicians and the demonstration would make a bigger impact when done right in their backyard rather than some place out there in the middle of nowhere.

Then again, I'm not even Lebanese so what do I know?

Cables won't be amazed by this, tripolities and police will be happy to see some fun.

Damn it, I actually thought that there going to do something like speed test and its going to rise to 30MB/s...so how long do we have to wait for them to get fast internet for us...1 year or more?

I read about the problem between the ministry and cedarcom and they (cedarcom) NEVER EVER SAID THIS NOR DONE IT!!!! They are for fast and cheap internet

The data provider (CSP) Cedarcom and Internet Service Provider (ISP), Broadband Plus, both belonging to the same group, announced in a press release making the complaint on February 7 against the Department of Telecom for not complying with its commitments regarding the installation of DSL.

The story goes back to 2006, when various private sector companies (including Cedarcom) had signed with the Ministry of Telecommunications and Ogero with a memorandum of understanding for the installation and deployment of DSL equipment (broadband Internet) throughout the Lebanon. Cedarcom actually installed its equipment in 2007 in 34 plants, but they were never connected to the LAN, thereby preventing Cedarcom to offer its services and causing him losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars .

Similarly Broadband Plus, which would have to pass through Ogero to offer Internet services, has not been able to operate.

"We are the only private sector company that has not been able to activate our services," Imad Tarabey regrets, CEO of Cedarcom, Commerce du Levant. He also deplores the unfair concurrece of Ogero sector: "Today, Ogero has installed DSL in 171 central servers of the country, while the private sector was unable to install than in 34. Result: almost 71% of 240,000 DSL subscribers are customers Ogero. "

The Department of Telecom now has two months to respond to the complaint. Otherwise, the case will automatically be brought before the Council of State.

Lebanon is ranked dead last of 169 countries in terms of connection speed over the past month.

Based on tests conducted by speedtest.net with over 50,000 internet users in Lebanon between February 7 and March 8, 2011, the average download speed in the country is 0.49 megabits per second downstream bandwidth (download) and 0.10 Mbps uplink speed (upload).

Lebanon's position has declined relative to last December , when the country had reached 157 th of 162 countries according to the same classification.

Munir Tarabay, CEO and Mobi Cedarcom, took the opportunity to denounce in a press release the excessive price that companies pay Telecom for international connections: 2700 dollars per month per E1 (or 2 megabits per second), which 1350 dollars in taxes to the state. He also denounced the unfair competition from the incumbent Ogero in the installation of DSL. As a reminder, Cedarcom complained in February against the Department of Telecom for not complying with its commitments to the facility.

The outgoing Minister of Telecommunications Charbel Nahas has initiated a plan to deploy fiber optics on Lebanese territory to drastically improve the connection speed.

Cedarcom... Ogero took from them terresterial customers, and now by 3G wants to cut from them (Mobi) wireless also.I think he dont want to stop 3G because he want bad for people, but he wants fair competition.
And before investing in 3G, government should give ISP's bandwidth.

Hmm, I thought Mobi from Cedarcom was certified by Ogero. How can Cedarcom sell Mobi without Ogero's intervention? If Cedarcom is selling Mobi without any deal with Ogero, then Ogero has the right to do whatever it wants. If Cedarcom and Ogero made a deal regarding Mobi; some kind of contract that allows Cedarcom to sell Mobi with Ogero's support; then Ogero must compensate any losses for releasing new technologies or at least add Cedarcom to the profit formula.

I'm noticing that some people think that 3G is the solution for our problems and the MOT will save the day with the introduction of 3G. This is totally wrong, we need, as nuclearcat said, more bandwidth to ISPs and improved DSL services. I'm dead sure that 3G will be expensive and limited the same way DSl was/still is. We need a radical solution.

3G cannot be cheap... it is better than GSM 2.75G, but still spectrum/bandwith not so efficient.
Those journalists, who wrote article about 21Mpbs and that cedarcom give 0.256Mbps... well, they dont know, that this 21Mbps is spherical horse in vacuum. It is possible only if noone is talking/working on base, and customer sit right under base... and even like that, customer equipment cannot get 21Mbps, it is whole base/sector capacity.

Add that this capacity for 21Mbps will cost for taxpayers 100-150K USD, and Cedarcom base cost much less.

Plus frequency high, means you need MORE bases to cover Lebanon. Base is VERY expensive, as i mention. Lebanon is extremely difficult country in this matter because of mountains. Even on obsolete GSM they cannot make proper coverage, what to to talk about 3G. My IMHO 3G should be implemented by private companies, with proper government regulation. Or even jump directly to LTE, it is more promissing.

Last thing. Who think 3G can replace other ISP's...

Negativity much? 3G was expensive because it was a new technology some 3 years ago.

Yes we'll get raped by 3G prices when eventually it'll be available, but not because its an expensive tech - its the way things roll here. Now bandwidth is getting extremely cheap (not here), actually the link you provided is some good 9 months old and still it have the unlimited offer. To quote them

If you plan to stream a LOT of music or video, and are currently an AT&T iPhone or iPad customer, you're probably better off sticking with the $30/month "unlimited" plan.

Still I agree, it'll never replace real good Internet providers. Btw I heard AT&T are capping their Internet users - they cant go past the 250GB a month, and each additional 50GB will cost them extra ten bucks. Wish we get punished with that cap, its fine by me.

Whether it was 3G, 4G or any wireless technology it will not solve the Internet problems. Wireless technologies are expensive, and need more maintenance... also they are not suitable for low-latency applications such as FPS games, and no body can guarantee how reliable the connection will be in Lebanon...

The real solution to the Internet problem in Lebanon is to connect all Ogero centrals to a central Internet exchange point, which is connected to the I-Me-We, and all these interconnections should be through optic fiber cables (not through crappy microwave links).
Then Ogero centrals could do the last mile delivery through DSL technologies for normal costumers, and FTTH for heavy costumers.
