3G is EXPENSIVE technology.

AT&T plans: Data Plans (type 10012 to enter, a random Zip-code from New York city).

The price/megabyte is somehow similar to what we are paying now for the Lebanese ADSl !!!

The only difference is mobility (which I don't need), and speed (which is useless if each gigabyte I download I am going to pay 10$).

3G is EXPENSIVE technology.
40$ 2Gb bandwith..10$ for 1 Gb...
Thats the pricing in lebanon ;)

In France they give you 4GB monthly limits on 3G.. Once this limit is exceeded you go back to EDGE... In France it is cheaper because of the ultra high competition

If what you are saying had really took place... then the only reason that is preventing ADSL plans upgrading is some stupid laws waiting approval from the government?!

i heard this same information from many people also , and yes a stupid government approval is blocking our way to light :) well of course if you want to call it government...it's more like a kindergarden

Indeed 3G is gonna be quite pricey I expect. For instance, in Poland here's what one popular ISP(who provide land lines+cellphone lines+internet) is offering via 3G http://www.era.pl/pl/indywidualni/uslugi-porady/internet/blueconnect/blueconnect_noc (Era is a polish version of Germany's "T-Mobile")

all speeds are up to 21Mbit/s (HSPA+) and up to 54Mbit/s(when you connect to one of their "Hotspot" WLAN areas)

2GB/month - $13.8/month(+50 free SMS)
4GB/month - $20.8/month
7GB/month - $27.8/month(+2000 free SMS)
35GB/month - $52.49/month(+2000 free SMS)
also they offer unlimited night quota from 12AM to 9AM (real unlimited quota/no "Fair Usage Policy")
If this was here I would pick the 35GB/month, might sound expensive.. but hey, I pay more than $60/month just for the EXTRA bandwidth I download over my 3GB/month limit so it makes sense :P

they are going to implement LTE there soon, I wish here they would have decided to jump over to LTE quick, but oh well.. guess it's better than nothing i suppose ;/

3G will be expensive if you are going to use it as your main Internet connection (like if you are going to connect a 3G USB dongle to your PC), so we are basically comparing it to DSL or Cable...

This should be the solution to our overly expensive phone rates and a way for wireless connectivity via your mobile device and that's it! On the other hand, broadband via fiber optics should the holy grail of internet solutions. Or am I missing something here...?

Yeah you are right. 3G is mainly for mobile devices (although it can be used for laptops). But it is not an alternative to DSL or other broadband services. The norm in the US is like 2 GB quota for 20$ (for 3G). My cousin lives in the US, he told me that he never feels he needs more than 2GB because he uses unlimited DSL whenever he wants to download something.

What you are saying is what should be done... but the government is saying nothing about upgrading DSL plans for normal users, and offering optic fiber connections to heavy users... it is only talking about 3G, and Mr. Nahhas said that people could buy a 3G USB stick to connect their laptops and desktops... so I think that they are aiming to connect 1 million Lebanese to the Internet through 3G!!! (Internet hungry Lebanese who wants to download movies, series, softwares, watch IPTV, and maybe host websites... all through 3G!!!)

As far as i know that 3G is 3rd generation mobile telecommunications so it is only related to mobile consumer electronics.

So yeah a lot of lebanese are misinformed about 3G, they think that the problem will be solved this summer. Also, how much do you think 3G will cost and what will be the quota? I don't think it is gonna be better than the current DSL plans (in term of cost and quota).

Kassem if I remember well you said that in April the internet will get better... It's not better in anyway my friend, nor the prices neither the services.... Can you ask your source about this?

The source is clearly political. Conflicts between Nahhas and Abdel Menhem Yussef are delaying everything. If it weren't for this conflict, we might have seen some improvements now (or in May). Add to that the fact that the government resigned and the project was paused for a 2-3 months.

Well there isn't going to be any government soon.... Guess we'll have to wait for 2012 :P
