u want unlimited, get the "cable" connection; u want speed, get anyting else... that's a start
And what is exactly that "anything else" you are talking about ?
Some kind of voodoo internet you have ?
because in Lebanon there is no option for "speed", yet!

Some comments in this thread are really killing me...

What is up with you guys ? do you want a good connection in this country or do want to go like "give a lebanese unlimited and he will download www.archive.org"
Dude that lebanese guy u talked about paid for that connection, he can download whatever the **** he wants"
He can download lolCatz images and videos all day, who cares ?

What we care about is that we don't get ****ed in the end. What we care about is when the cables are all over lebanon and the system is ready, that all lebanese people have access to a good connection at a good price.
Not the politicians having a terra download speed & unlimited quota and the "cha3b el 3ade" having a shitty one.

Are you Government spies? /s

This really saddens me, because what i know is that, no matter how much we talk now, we would have no choice about neither speed or quota for the internet they will give us in the end, it will be 100% limited so they can get our money for each additional Gb, & it will be 100% expensive ( like the cellphones !!!), i just hope that the speed/quota/lag would be logial.

One more thing just imagine wireless internet all over lebanon that is stable, fast& cheap. We'll be all talking on on our cellphones using fring ;)

"bl 3arabe el mchabra7, leh ma mn koun la marra a7ssan mn ghayrna, w bi ktir ?????"

Peace!
i meant adsl 512 or 1meg, or simply that black pesco box, they're not 24mbits but they're acceptable.
He can download lolCatz images and videos all day, who cares ?
WE ALL CARE!
you wana know why the internet is so shitty? because we have a shared connection and that d1ckhead who paid 40$ to download movies is sucking all YOUR allowed speed. he paid 40$ to get shared connection, it should be shared u know.

you can get a dedicated connection if ur willing to pay, then suck all the bytes you want and i simply wont give a damn because they're not shared with me.

lots of satellite companies http://www.satsig.net/ivsat2.htm provide u with download speeds up to 155Mbps, u use ur regular internet for upload and the satellite link for your downloads. it has high latency but its a hell of a fast connection
chosen2k wroteOne more thing just imagine wireless internet all over lebanon that is stable, fast& cheap. We'll be all talking on on our cellphones using fring ;)
and that way none of us will get more than 2kbps, its *shared*
the d1ckhead is not the lolcat user, the d1ckhead is the provider my friend. tackle the problem from its origins and not from its tail.
chosen2k wrotethe d1ckhead is not the lolcat user, the d1ckhead is the provider my friend. tackle the problem from its origins and not from its tail.
oh come on! practically 90% of the guys i know leave their pcs on at night downloading torrentz, some of em carry their laptops and whenever they find internet they put that utorrent to full speed.
im not saying that providers aren't d1ckheads, they're just not the only ones.
@chosen2k: well, maybe for u piracy is not an issue, but for me...I really think that we should start learning how to deal with legal stuffs to see some REAL progress.

We will never get Paypal service in our country by the way you are thinking(I know it's not only a matter of online piracy but I do think this is one of the factors) and I believe that you don't care as long as u are downloading all "lolCats" and movies you like!

Also I'm aware that online piracy is everywhere, but the high rate here in Lebanon is just ridiculous!

Lie.
You cannot reach 155Mbps on current satellites. You can reach 121 Mbps (Newtec DVB-S2 on 36Mhz transponder with 4.5meter RX antenna. Setup cost $50000. Not for end-users.)
Prices of satellite internet is 1.2 - 1.5 times more cheap than lebanese connection. And you still need upload.
If someone want to save few cents and want more options and control on his connection - he can use satellite.
nuclearcat wroteLie.
i got that number from the link above
The emphasis is on reliable data, video and VoIP, with data rates from 64kbps to 155 Mbps, either dedicated or shared, symmetrical or asymmetric, as required by the client. IP is used to provide internet, data and images for the entire region.
nuclearcat wroteLie.
Maybe they consider compression. In any case this is too expensive for the end user, so I dont care.
BTW, what about VISP "dedicated connection"...

Well here's the news flash for you, PIRACY IS A WORLDWIDE ISSUE If it was because of that specific reason Paypal would have been banned in most countries that use high speed Internet connection, because that's where most of the piracy comes from, you think Lebanon's problem is with online Piracy?? well Internet here sucks so bad that there's no major online piracy, most of it is because of some local shops who gets illegal and cracked copies of software/games from Syria, then redistribute it...

So Internet wasn't the problem in the first place, and do you actually work for WMG or Viacom, because your acting like one...Well most of the stuff that are illegally getting downloaded do not deserve the high price in the first place due to the fact that they are either half assed software/games/music whatever or just plain OVERPRICED...

My point is Piracy shouldn't be an obstacle..Internet service should be always progressing regardless of what piracy is doing, their are lots of web tasks that require high internet bandwidth usage, like webcam streams and HD youtube videos, come on no one watches tv anymore, well atleast for me, if i need anything for fun purpose,educational, reviews or anything else, I go to youtube and i dont want any limitations on my video views..You know people already are paying less than me and you in almost all countries and getting waaaay better Internet service..
Did you read this guys:
That report demonstrates that in 2005, the total copyright industries in Lebanon contributed around US$1.04 billion to the annual gross domestic product (GDP), employed almost 50,000 workers, and contributed 4.75% to the GDP and 4.49% to overall employment
I don't honestly think that the government is gonna get you the demanded bandwidth if the contribution is gonna decrease. ;)

First of all, please read my post again. I wasn't talking about "online" piracy only, I was talking in general (downloading or buying from local shops or whatever).

So once again, I don't think that Paypal is not supporting Lebanon because of piracy but it's somehow related to our government's policies towards piracy...etc

Secondly, I do think that a disaster will happen if we got a fast connection with unlimited bandwidth!

I said it in previous posts and I'm saying it now, what we need is an education!
Let me explain my idea, if you want to play a game, watch a movie or use a software...what is the first thing you are going to do? ....download a cracked copy OR go buy a cracked copy from a local shop!
You will NOT even think of buying it! I can assure you. and this is the problem I guess.
MegaCool wroteMy point is Piracy shouldn't be an obstacle..Internet service should be always progressing regardless of what piracy is doing, their are lots of web tasks that require high internet bandwidth usage, like webcam streams and HD youtube videos, come on no one watches tv anymore, well atleast for me, if i need anything for fun purpose,educational, reviews or anything else, I go to youtube and i dont want any limitations on my video views..You know people already are paying less than me and you in almost all countries and getting waaaay better Internet service..
Now I agree with you that this should not be an obstacle, for me a good internet is as important as a stable electricity feed and water! and IF there are some people who is misusing the service, they should be punished!

And once again, "ser2et el 7arami MESH 7alal!", if you think that something is overpriced simply don't buy it and DON'T get a cracked copy either! you can't afford getting a windows system, grab a linux OS!
XhacK wroteSo once again, I don't think that Paypal is not supporting Lebanon because of piracy but it's somehow related to our government's policies towards piracy...etc
No, Paypal doesn't support Lebanon because our parliament hasn't approved the Electronic Signature law yet. It's been in the parliament since 1996 by the way. So legally, they cannot do business unless the law gets approved.
@Xhack

let me tell you something, the least that an american or an european makes a month is no less than 1000$, I know that in france the least you get for working a month is 1200 euros, so its normal for them to pay 60$ for a game, but what about the lebanese, I for example am a student and also work, what I make is around 300$ a month, so how can I afford a game for 60$ or a new movie that I want to watch....let me make this mathematically:

A=european that makes 1500$
B=me that makes 300$

for A paying 60$ of his 1500$ is an expense of 4% from his salary...
for B paying 60$ of my salary is an expense of 20% from my salary....

so if I buy 5 games/movies/software.... a month I would have spent all my salary....

but for the european buying 5 games/movies/software... is an expanse of 20%....

all I'm saying is the Lebanese cant afford it....
In france games cost 70 euros so that makes nearly a hundred dollars
@Nemesis-301
Lebanon is a small village compared to Europe or USA, they don't really care whether Lebanese can buy their games or not, it's as simple as that.

First of all, how come you are comparing an employee wage to a student?!!
Unless the student in the US makes 1000$+ which is not true

2- I make 1000$+ a month and I DON'T buy 5 games/movies/softwares a month! who does!!
I buy a game each 1 or 2 months! because for me these things are luxury!

And as I said before, you (the lebanese) can afford a packet of cigarette each day but you can't afford buying a genuine copy of the OS you are using each day!
