Giving away bandwidth doesn't require either?
Why then, some ISPs (can name 3, but won't be appropriate) are waiting like 3 years to get more bandwidth?
Believe me, unlike Marwan Hamadeh, Bassil is the same thief and liar, but much smarter. He bothers at least
to cover himself with nice lies and show-offs that he is the good one, trying to improve the things, but getting spikes in his wheels from every where. Poor him... ...
nuclearcat
battikh it seems only in Lebanon minister of finance, premier minister and minister of telecom must sign bandwidth approval for ISP, it takes few month, and he will make for that few appearances on TV making from it big story.
In other countries it is usual procedure, that can be done in few minutes over web-interface.
Probably this guys bored too much and have nothing to do else...
rolf
nuclearcat wroterolf - there is big people behind it. Check whois, there is "Salam Yamout", one of Cisco top persons in Lebanon.
When big commercial companies involved in such campaigns, i don't believe in their pureness.
They want to sell more routers.

The project "broadbandlebanon" could be officially declared dead. No e-mail since the last 72 hours as promised on their website :(
J4D
oh yeah its dead , its just a big title for no plan .
teodorgeorgiev
Maybe if someone here knows these people, we might contact them and see if join?
As Rolf said - it is senseless to create 100 small groups for the same cause.
Probably the broadbandlebanon guys became bored and disappointed and just left the project...
J4D
it is possible , i left them an email about 2 weeks ago still no response .
nuclearcat
Maybe it is clear now, why all this buzz around broadband manifesto.
The fiber optic cables in Lebanon are up to the standards they just need some hardware upgrades... As for the rest it can be easily done and this is mentioned int he study presented to Minister Bassil that has a detailed explanation and implementation done by Cisco.
invalid-user-43
but, nuc, even if it's an opportunist move by Cisco that involves politicians as well, wouldnt the implementation for such infrastructure be beneficial to the internet situation in Lebanon ?

Can you elaborate?
Anyway, they have (had?) resources, since they made a well designed website and a media campaign.
J4D
ohh yeah that really intrigued me , they even did an excellent add with IMPACT BBDO ! (expensive)
samer
since they made a well designed website
That uses tables and inline formatting :/

Ouf, Samer :)
Every animal bites in its own way :)

Ok I'm about to rehash that "old" topic.
1- I'm sorry I haven't followed the discussion from the start. The title of the topic doesn't interest me as I don't live in Lebanon and don't care for a particular ISP. From an archive point of view this title does a lot of harm to what I believe to be the most interesting topic in the forum. Unfortunately, I haven't read all of it, (6 pages so far), but I have a couple of ideas I'd like to share.
2- I strongly abide by the idea that it's up to us "geeks" to initiate the change in the crappy internet situation in Lebanon. Geeks invented the internet, geeks had their saying in every major issue world wide. So yeah in a way we have a responsibility towards the situation.
3- Yes the problem is a political one. But it isn't directed at one party or another. No matter which you support (or hate), taking actions doesn't have to be yet another targeted attack from one camp to another. This time we need things done. (In other words, we're not attacking Bassil, Aoun, Hariri, Sanioura or anyone in particular for that matter... all these guys owe us decent connections).
4- As with every political problem, the solution is simple: we have to go mainstream. Some dozens geeks complaining aren't enough to scare whoever's in charge and start making changes. We need to raise awareness to the problem, and start a proper campaign to get things done.
5- Before talking about sit-ins, protests and other "mouzaharat", we geeks know better than anyone the power of the web as a communication tool. Web 2.0 right? So I say we create an organism, (a committee if you will) that would start raising awareness over the internet. Let's invade Facebook, Twitter, blogs, forums, ... This stuff can be done for very little effort and can rally other non-geeks internet addicts to the cause (there are many of them... think of all the facebook addicts), not to mention the great publicity to lebgeeks forum.
6- Once we reach a good number, we can then target more "traditional" media. I'm talking about press, newspapers, TV, radio, ...
7- And only then, when the problem will have been a bit more mainstream, we could continue escalation and talk directly to the ministry about our demands.
I know I'm late, but I really want to help. I'm not in Lebanon right now, but I'll do everything I can from here.
J4D
rahmu , welcome to the team :) we appreciate all your help . i will discuss all the issues in an upcoming post and ill be certain to take account of your precious notes :)
Joe
Anytime, man. Keep us all posted.
battikh
i will post something about some subject some time.
just wanted to let you know guys, just so that you can prepare yourselves. so be ready, coz it could come anytime, and you'll all enjoy it a lot.
(sorry for the OT)
J4D
battikh at least im trying to do something ;) im not sitting on my lazy ass , cracking jokes. and yup you said it you will enjoy it a lot :) especially when the internet speed gets increased or perhaps you don't want that ? and don't give me that silly answer that you are not in Lebanon ;)
battikh
1- you don't know me so i don't care about your opinion about me and my laziness as it can't be objective and based on facts as you don't know me.
2- i'm not making jokes, i'm trying to make an important point for the image of this forum.
i'll detail it more in a less sarcastic and more direct way:
what about using the time you use to post that you're going to say something, to actually say what you want to say?
or just say what you want to say when you want to say it, no need to make introductions. it's not tv, we don't need to know at what time the show will be. when you'll post it, we'll know and we'll read it. so save you're time.
enno i come to check the posts, hoping to find some interesting info, and all i find is "i'll posts something later on" and "oh cool", and other useless posts (not saying that you're the only one doing this, i probably also do it).
sorry but i'm more into productivity and less into bragging.
don't take it negatively, i'm not intending to attack you or anything. just try to be more effective. people who check threads check them hoping to find new info, not to check your schedule or see if you're gonna post at a later stage or who agrees with who and who welcomes who.
lately, because of all these socializing, non-informative posts, i tend to just click on the "mark all topics as read" button (here, i didn't even had to go up and check what it says, i remembered it, and i have an AWFUL memory...) instead of actually checking new posts coz i know that 90% of posts will not be that interesting and will most probably just be 2 people chatting together not saying anything much relevant.
do you agree with me that it is not interesting for me (or anyone else) to read a post saying that another more interesting post will come later on? i would like to just see the later more interesting post, there is absolutely no added value to the previous one.
it's just my opinion, feel free to agree with it or not, you're a free grown man. hope you'll take it positively and not as an insult. and btw, this doesn't go just for you, but for you, me and many others.
and samer, sorry again for the OT...
Joe
Battikh I agree with what you say, but I also admit that your (first) post was somewhat aggressive. Jad is one of the most active members on the forum, so in a way he can somewhat afford to post something like that.
Now I doubt anyone will disagree with your second post but we're not here to educate each other ("nrabbe ba3d").
So let's get past this guys and start talking about what real concrete actions we can take.
