No, just i did quick "hack" for qos, should be more stable now. Can you check please?---()--()--- wroteWell here, it connects for 2 minutes, then the download becomes weaker then dies. Maybe it has to do with peak time.
Feedback for VISP
Nuclearcat, I hope we meet one day.. you know..
nuclearcat, would VISP be willing to be an ArchLinux mirror? I can ask ArchLinux devs to rsync whitelist your IP.
You could use a cron job to update the mirror via rsync every 3 hours or so. After the first rsync, further updates are small.

I am thinking to install server on Beirut exchange point, many ISP's is there. Then it will worth it.
Otherwise... only VISP users will benefit from this. We can do mirror, but... thats won't help for majority of lebanese people.

So far so good. It's been 12 minutes the download has been on, and constant.nuclearcat wroteNo, just i did quick "hack" for qos, should be more stable now. Hey nuclearcat... PM waiting for you
Just a question guys. I do not want to sound noob, I know the difference between a hub and a switch for sure.. but.. I was having problems with my switch lately connected to the network. My reseller went crazy he wants to replace it by a hub :| he said that it will not affect the performance. As far as I know.. Hub are half duplex thing.. That hub will still be connected to another switch.. and 4 other users including me. There is some debate on the internet that a 100mbps Hub will not affect the Internet performance. Should I go for it?

If they switch to an illegal ISP, then you can report the ISP and take them out of business, no?nuclearcat wroteIf you have any idea how to fix this - welcome.
One of ways to create something similar to "labor union", but "Lebanese internet users union", which will help users to educate and help to understand when technical support or reseller lying to them about something.
Its would be nice to see lebanon show up in the list of mirrors for freshmeat for example.nuclearcat wroteI am thinking to install server on Beirut exchange point, many ISP's is there. Then it will worth it.

He probably doesnt know the difference between switch and hub. What he refers as hub might be a switch, I dont even know if they still sell hubs nowadays. Do they?Kareem wroteJust a question guys. BTW hubs are not half duplex. What differenciates switch and hubs is that switch only forwards packets to the correct port. hubs forward packets to all ports coz theyre stupid. Everyone connected to a hub can catch each others packets. Normally for LAN it is a security problem.
Since youre most probably using PPOE (you are right?) then I dont know how much of a security problem it is. I dont know the details of the protocol and how easy it is for someone to steal your internet username and password, but it is possible.
As for the performance, 4 users with no more then 1mbps bandwidth each shouldnt not be a problem at all for a 100mbps hub. Even if it is half-duplex (simple math)

DDL is stopping yet again.
It's completely unfunctional now.
It's completely unfunctional now.
Explanation is easy, at 00:00 i release shapers that was slowing down people who abuse bandwidth. Seems i must do that more late.
anyway cares to advise ?
did... edited my post
Can you please rephrase ?nuclearcat wroteExplanation is easy, at 00:00 i release shapers that was slowing down people who abuse bandwidth. Seems i must do that more late.

where am I to start... first to answer your question..
- regarding performance in relation to generic internet usage, no you wont notice a difference.
- using more intensive protocols such as the ones used in gaming, you will experience package drops and lower latency
. if there is a poor cable, a shortcut or a bad nick or a pc with bots and virus on it, you will experience a congestion on the network that is if it does not come to a halt. hubs are more prone to brake down and easily go bezerk when there is a bad NIC, cable or software behind it.
- there is no rational excuse to use hubs in todays networking, hubs were intended as a cheaper alternative in small environments back in the days when components were very expensive. nowadays a switch is what you should select, if you select a hub you need to have a very good geeky excuse for that (ive had an experiense with such once but that is a different story)
- security wise, YOU WOULD BE A FIRST CLASS IDIOT TO USE A HUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a hub or a switch with mirrored ports are the ideal thing to sniff the network!! so think twice!!!!!!
get a switch, install and use it and tell your ISP that its a hub. if he persists then change your ISP as he is a first grade moron! get him online to nasherlo 3ardo!!!!

Sourceforge maybe you mean? Its would be nice to see lebanon show up in the list of mirrors for freshmeat for example.
Well their mirror thingy not much related to "local" intranet.

# A minimum of 150Mbps of bandwidth.
Do you think it is real for Lebanon? If IX links is 2Mbps :-D
hello rolf well I am not really afraid of sniffing because pppoe is indeed secured .. but just one thing : Hubs are half-duplex only :
The hub says it > supports full duplex. What am I missing? Hubs never support full duplex. Only switches can support full duplex. A hub echos/repeats/shares ( http://www.scyld.com/pipermail/tulip/1998-December/000565.html )
With a hub, packets can collide; with a switch they do not/cannot collide. Therefore, a hub cannot operate at full duplex; one of the pairs ... ( http://www.duxcw.com/dcforum/DCForumID2/247.html )
IF they are half-duplex I believe I it is not the bandwidth that should be considered. I think being not able to transmit and receive at the same time means that voice conversations will lag , correct me if I am wrong because believe it or not, hubs do exist nowadays.

I assumed that hubs have some kind of buffer memory, and store a packet then forward it to all ports. But I might be wrong.
Well if VISP is having headaches and paying fees to stay legal (they are, right?), there is no reason someone should come along without a license and take away your business.nuclearcat wroteAnd take a job from many people?

Maybe the resellers prefer working for VISP because theyre legal, but I cant really say, i dont have too much knowledge about that.
So, what about the DDL ? When will it be restored ? :o
