Well, i am wondering what is this stuff called "proxy". so far i have found that is allows you to hide your real identity on the net. Is there anything else?
And, i do have another question: how can i get one if i need it?
Hey Piotr,

it's nice to see you taking interest in subjects like these.
However, before asking vast questions like these, it would be easier for you to read on the topic on Wikipedia first and Google the keyword.

Once you have read sufficient material about the subject, do not hesitate to ask specific questions.

Cheers :)

I'll try to be more specific. Plz don't be shy to ask me to be more clear:

1. First of all i found that a proxy server allows a company for instance, to limit her users access to some web sites. But this does not really concerne me.
2. I however found that a proxy server hides some info i might not want to reveal ( pass, username...) and this is what interestes me: i would like to use this kind of server.
3. but i read on wikipedia that some proxy severs might be malicious and steal your infos.

All in all, i would like to know 2 thing: is it good to use a proxy, considering my purpose? and which proxy server should i use?

Thank you for all help you offer.
A proxy sits between your computer and the website.
Normally (without proxies), your computer sends a request for a page to a web server, and the web server sends back the page.
When you have a proxy, your computer will send the request to the proxy instead, the proxy will then send the request to the web server, and the web server will send the page back to the proxy, which will sent it back to you.
Once you understand the concept correctly you can understand the advantages.
2 other things worth noting.

Using a proxy is slower than connecting directly to a web page.

I know it said somewhere that behind a proxy you are anonymous (i didn't say invisible) , but not completely... you can really be traceable if someone or some agency wants to crack down on you.

not really
for instance, i sometimes use proxy in order to lower my latency, (changing routes) and the difference is pretty good ! (250-400 ms on WoW :P)
as for other agency's tracking you ... u could give them hell by bouncing on different proxy's and using secure tunneling. but ntn is untraceable :(
I have a question here ... For example, when i try sometimes to download something on rapidshare, the answer is try to use another proxy... how am i able to choose one and use it instead of the one given to me originally from the provider ?

Thanks
if you have a hosting account somewhere and can got shell access, there are plenty of scripts to do the job for you. Some don't even require shell access (there's a php script for that, i don't really remember the name)
