I never noticed a difference going from the first 720p phone I had (galaxy nexus) to the (Xperia Z 1080p) screen.
Manufacturers however would like you to think otherwise. More Pixels the better thats how they keep on selling you a phone every year.
the way you should think of pixels is like RAM. if you have too little of it then thats going to lead to a bad experience, too much of it and you won't get see a difference. 1440p on 5 inch with almost 600ppi is ludicrous IMO, your TV at home at you watch SD content on it most of the time is 1080p and its probably 40-50 inch with about 45 ppi.
What you will probably notice going from one screen to another is the color reproduction, and contrast ratio those stuff make a screen look better and they have nothing to do with resloution.
Well I agree with Haidcar on this one (although we're out of subject).
For me, anything above 250 ppi is very good, above 300 is excellent!
So I'm good with HD on a 5.5" screen (267ppi; which by the way is nearly the retina definition in apple products).
FHD on everything up to 8" is more than enough!
QHD is just useless for phones!
I'm sad that the screen resolution is included in today's specs race, instead of focusing on innovation, higher battery capacities with smaller sizes, etc...
