Fellow Geeks,

Recently, interest in electronics and robotics has spurred from a topic on LebGeeks. We have thus decided to issue an extended workshop that tackles everything from basic electronics to robotics. Jad Berro has kindly offered his assistance as a tutor as well as the venue at InnovoLB.

This workshop will start with introductory material and hopefully towards the end reach an advanced stage of doing robotics. The workshop is provided for free however, members will have to buy their own kits (Kit required is linked at the beginning of this post). The kit is ordered from DX.com which requires around 20 days of shipment, as such if you're interested in this workshop you must purchase this kit ASAP! (the workshop starts on the 19th of January).

The most important thing to note is that these workshops are not separate in terms of content. If someone misses a session, he would have missed a lot (Unless we have decided to reschedule before hand).

If you're a software geek, a programming geek, a hobbyist, someone who just needs an academic recap, someone who wants to sit with other geeks. This workshop is for you, but remember the members enrolled in this are very serious about learning.

The entire plan has not been set yet since Jad is out of the country, but based on our last meeting, you can safely say that we're starting with "What's a circuit?" and ending with "Building Autonomous Robots".

As a reference, Jad plans to have everyone able to build this!

There will be pictures, videos, updates on pretty much every session.

Remember, this is not your average "Plug and Play" workshop.

Let's build!

SESSION 1 UPDATE - 19/1/2013 - DURATION: 3 HOURS

Pictures - Video

A lovely gathering of geeks at InnovoLB occured on Saturday 19/1/2013

Highlights:

- Everyone introduced himself.
- We discussed what everyone would like to get out of this workshop.
- We went over one of the robots J4D has and started 'guessing' what components are being used.
- After each component was jotted on the board, J4D went over the list and briefly described what each component does.
- We took the list of parts within the Kit mentioned in the topic and went over every component and what it does.

All in all, it was an amazing gathering with amazing people. Everyone seemed excited to pursue this workshop!

Here's the list of attendees with a brief that describes each one of them! (humorous, as in a joke)

J4D - The Teacher, he even started quizzing Leonedes from the first session!
m0ei - The Mac Dude standing next to the wall minding his own business.
yasamoka - Jerk brought an amazing mechanical keyboard and showed it off.
xterm - No comment.
rtwo2008 - Did you guys know that RT are his initials, WO is Warhammer Online, and 2008 was, well I don't remember.
Leonedes - Remember that skinny guy from Road Trip? Well he's a darker version of him.
rtp - From the moment J4D opened the door, to the moment he left, that guy had a smile on his face. We think he was high.
achalhoub - I'm calling him the 'Ideas' guy. He brought up many cool ideas we could implement.
data33 - Our resident financial expert! Got a financial problem? Well no problem! He will solve it!
scatman - I'm calling him the schemer. He sits quietly, thinking, analyzing, scheming!
Sylvio - A friend of Leonedes, little calm but doesnt hold a candle to scatman.

IMPORTANT: Big thanks to SCATMAN, whose kit arrived early and thus allowed us to enjoy a great session! Hugs and Kisses! :-)

- When everyone arrived, scatman pulled out his kit and handed it over to Jad.
- Jad went over every component and briefly mentioned what it is.
- We then had an amazing introduction to the different kinds of DC motors (Brushed, Brushless, Servo, Stepper)
- Jad then explained the difference between Analog and Digital.
- Jad went over a brief explanation on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)
- We then had a nice visual demonstration on Potentiometers.
- We also had a relatively comprehensive explanation of Resistance, current and how both are measured.
- We had a break at 6:35PM and resumed at 6:50PM
- Jad went over the Stepper Motor explaining both Unipolar and Bipolar stepper motors.
- The highlight of the session was Jad explaining the ATMEGA328 chip in detail and going over each pin.
- At 7:40PM, Jad showed the arduino blink code and explained the basics. Jad then gave an example of a working Servo which we all chipped in with trying to make adjustments to code. Finally we tested controlling the Servo through Serial communication.

All in all it was an amazing session!

See you this saturday!

Highlights:

Theme for Session 3 was BURN BABY BURN! details below:

- We focus this session on completing the passive components
- We talked about Diodes and their purpose, with a brief mention of Zener Diodes and ofcourse LEDs.
- A bulk of the time was spent on Capacitors.
- We talked about their purpose.
- Jad showed us what happens when you hook a capacitor improperly (BOOM!)
- Jad did a demo charging a 1000uF capacitor with a 12V battery then discharging it through the Multimeter
- We then talked about Inductance, namely coils and where they're used in.
- Jad got screwed while magnetizing a screwdriver (check pictures and look at his fingers)
- Effectively we ended up doing a water heater!
- We talked about Voltage Regulators with an emphasis on 7805 and the circuit required.
- Took a break form 7:15PM to 7:25PM.
- Jad explained breadboards, wiring and how to properly strip wires.
- Finally, we went over all passive components on the breadboard and finally got our first LED to light up!
- Towards the end Jad started requesting assistance from people but everyone was scared shitless to assist HIM!

See you this saturday!
Basically if the time stays at 5 pm every Saturday then i'm in, and is very convenient for me since any other time would be hard.
I'm definitely in, Saturday is great for avoiding traffic.
Think of us university students :( We have finals coming up this month!
However, I do recommend paying even a "small fee" even if jad is volunteering to do this.
enroll me please, I will get the kit after the first session tho
By the way, is the Kit ordering process to Lebanon complicated? (tax and such....) In other words, would it be easier if I just try to get it with someone coming here from abroad?
Updated date to 19th, was a mistake on the 15th.
The kit ordered from dx.com will be free delivered to your doorstep with no tax or anything extra to pay.
Khaled, it will always be on a Saturday.
J4D wroteThe kit ordered from dx.com will be free delivered to your doorstep with no tax or anything extra to pay.
Khaled, it will always be on a Saturday.
Do you mean not to go through Aramex (USA virtual mailbox) (which will definitely result in VAT and Customs etc...), but through dx.com's shipping process directly to Lebanon which will eventually be delivered to us by LibanPost without any customs/VAT ?
@rwo2008; yeah don't worry, you won't pay any customs/VAT. They will ship it with HongKong Post.
4 days later
This is a reminder to all enrolled. The workshop begins this saturday at 5:00PM

If you changed your mind, please notify me to remove you from the list.
is there a place to park the car?
hi everyone,
i want to know if someone got the kit, and how much did it cost?
does it require vat or custom clearance because i want to use expedit shipping to get it fast cause i found out late about this workshop.
Well normally on Saturdays the streets around us are empty, there is a high chance you will find a spot. You people should carpool as well!
J4D wroteYou people should carpool as well!
I'm willing to pick 3 people up if on my route. I live in Mansourieh, so if anyone is on my way, just notify me.
