the snr tweaking actually raised your speed by x2 and with little errors?
Yes, absolutely. I've told my story all around the forum now, but in short I have an interference problem with building's elevator. When it's in use, my SNR drops by 8dB. This basically affects gaming and real time applications. When I'm only downloading big files or during night-time when no-one is using the elevator, I tweak the SNR to get the higher speed.
To everyone noticing that their speed dropped, have you also noticed that your SNR improved ?
Personally my speed was set by the modem to 7Mbps by itself back when the SNR was 6. Then 5Mbps when it suddenly decided to set the target SNR to 12. Then 3700Kbps when it also suddenly decided to set the SNR at 15.
As far as I've concluded, the target SNR is set as part of the negotiation between the modem and the exchange (CO). So if the modem tells the exchange "I want my SNR to be 6dB you t*at, gimme even if you think it's unstable", it'll get a 6dB SNR and potentially a higher speed connection.
So now since I'm on 15 SNR I'm tweaking it to become 6, hence getting 7Mbps.
