How does AliExpress work?

I'm thinking of purchasing something from aliexpress, but I've no idea how I'm supposed to get started...

How long does the shipping take?
If the item is defective will they return it? incase they do, will I get charged again for shipping & customs?
Most importantly, What are the payment methods available?

Unrelated question; Is there any website/service you recommend for purchasing items from amazon?
