Can a CS major join the the Lebanese syndicate for Engineers?
It's not an engineering degree, so you probably can't get into the engineering syndicate (ps: is that the word you were looking for? :))
I remember there was a time when they wanted to change the computer science name into software engineers, and add it to the engineering syndicate. But i guess they remained just talks and rumors.
No, because the engineering syndicate requires a 5-year study in the domain of engineering (i.e. you degree should have the word "engineering" on it). This is done by having engineers request إذن مزاولة مهنة
What's the point of joining this syndicate anyway? Im studying computer engineering and im not looking forward in joining it.
No CS majors can't join.

tufi2: for starters: great insurance rates.
since we're in the subject about it, I'm studying 3 years in Civil Engineering but I will get a BS(Bachelor of Science) and my university(HCU) doesn't offer B.E(Bachelor of Engineering). how big is the difference between them and if it's big then how can I get my B.E after I graduate(hopefully)?
and also what might be the main advantage of B.E over B.S?
What if you have a Masters in CS. Is there a syndicate of some kind to join?

I have heard what you said all the time, but I always wonder why the AUB students can get in with their 4 years? Is it just because they take summer classes in 2 of the 4 years?

I am studying Electrical Engineering in Canada and my program is 4 years (2 study semesters per year and 1 co-op work term/semester per year) and I find it ridiculous that they still want me to do an extra 1 year to have 5 years.

Sorry mnl kel ye3ni w with all due respect bas the education here is much better than Lebanon!
@Raficoo If you're willing to get an M.S degree, then you'll be able to register to the Order of Engineers and Architects.

Mesa177, I don't think you're registered in the Order since you're a Biomedical Engineer ( Or you're considered an Electrical Engineer?), but if you know the benefits of joining it, please list them. I guess the most important is the insurance and the after-retirement plan?
FYI it is not a syndicate :P it is called the Order of Engineers and Architects (oea.org.lb)

It's true, Raficoo, you have to complete your MS before joining the order of engineers.

@Mahmoud Brk: not only did I join, I joined as a biomedical engineer (true, it is considered as a branch of electrical engineering, but they write "biomedical engineer" as major on the official records).

Requirements of joining are located on the website www.oea.org.lb
Thank you for the website proners and Mesa.

I still find the requirements for people studying abroad ridiculous!
@mesa177 I was asking for the benefits of joining the Order, and not the requirements.
I think there should be a serious consideration of creating a new syndicate for IT people in Lebanon, it can include people who are tech related graduates with non-engineering degrees. The rule for joining could be made in such a way similar to that of the syndicate of engineer where it would require the person be a tech related major graduate(for example CS) with a Masters in that field or a similar(e.g. MS CS or in GIS or Networking etc...). Professionals with degrees related to UI design such as web design could also join maybe, why not.

I think such a syndicate is very important in Lebanon at least to be able to protected the IT people's rights especially those who work as freelancers or want to open their own small business. Some years ago it could have seemed not much necessary but now it has become more than ever. It will be more and more important for the future given the IT boom that the country may pass through sometime soon.

I you think about it, if taxi drivers have a syndicate of their own that protects their rights and supports them, why wouldn't the IT related professionals have one too?

Thanks and have a good day.

Insurance and retirement if i'm not mistaken.
The order of engineers if for all kinds of engineering degrees graduates including the IT crowd.
It signifies that you have reached a certain place in your educational career and you have the right to be part of it.
I myself am looking forward to joining it someday, people who don't like it or whatever just don't join.

True, and that's why we can handle one more year before joining the order and make something of ourselves.
And with that surpass whatever bad education system we are attending.
