Well i'm new to Android, as i prefer Apple products over the rest. Today, i received a Xoom as a gift, and i must say it's very good but it needs some updates asap.
I googled but i couldnt find an answer to update to 3.1 unless i root, and i'm not sure if i'll do so or not.

So I need some help answering the questions below:

- Why i can't update to 3.1 even thought it's available from last month ?
- Rooting is like Jailbreaking ? Is there a Cydia like application for android ?
- While i open the Android Market, it shows me the prices in Lebanese, is there an option to change the country for the store to another country ?
- Installous for Xoom available ? I know that it's Applanet ? but i couldn't find it on the market.
- Do you advise me to root it ? pros and cons ? Is there a multiboot options available if i rooted ? Because i need to install Backtrack 5 on it, it will help me a lot.
- It supports multitasking up to 6 applications no more ? And how to close the opened apps ?
well i am going to answer some of these questions hoping to help you...

- the update is available over the air so you should wait to receive a notification to update so just make sure that automatic update is turned on. and if you don't wait and you want to update manually so you must root your device and update it by yourself.

-NO rooting is not like Jailbreaking. rooting allows you to install custom roms, launcher, mods , android new versions etc (probably they are all unofficial).

-why do you want to change the country? all the apps are available for Lebanon.

-i think you use Installous on you Iphone to hack the appstore and you want to hack the android market so no installous is not available for android but there is a way to hack the android market but i will not post it here (probably Samer will remove it if i did :P plus it's piracy )

-my advice is don't root now because you are new to android when you become experienced to android root it.(i don't mean wait a year to root but few days or week to get used to android)

-Some users use the Task killer app to close applications but i don't recommend it some users are reporting problems when using this app.
Thanks for your help.

It's been released a month ago, why should i wait more ?
Am gonna Root it tomorrow.
your welcome :D

i don't know why you didn't get the update yet. so if you want to get the update rooting seems to be the solution.
but make sure you get the update of your device because Xoom have two variants a 3G version and a Wi-Fi version.

Could you link me a good tutorial on how to update from a stock 3.0.1 to a rooted 3.1 ?

Or should i root 3.0.1 then update to a rooted 3.1 ?
sorry but you didn't understand the idea very good, you root the phone so you can change the rom or launcher or install mods, so you have to root your phone then install the new 3.1 version is it more clear now ?

ok since Motorola Xoom come with locked bootloader we have to unlock it first instructions are here
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/02/25/how-to-unlock-the-motorola-xoom-bootloader/

then you have to root your device instructions are here
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/02/25/how-to-root-the-motorola-xoom/

then finally update

NOTE: all those instructions are for the Motorola Xoom 3G not the Motorola Xoom Wifi
AND DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK
If you are not getting update notification maybe it's because it's not available yet for your device manufacturer' country. It happened to me with my X10, I had to debrand it.

Try XDA forums, it's the ultimate Android Development forum, lots of tweaks, guides and custom ROMs.
I recommend it or every Android user :)

Plus you won't find of course Applanet on the market, it's illegal, and its server is currently offline.
Try to search some forums i'll pm you one if you want.
I already rooted 3.0.1 and updated with preserving the root to 3.1
I know xda website, I followed the tutorials there and i'm thinking of installing Tiamat Kernel

I installed Applanet from their website but their server is still down, I checked their twitter page to make sure if the problem is from my part or their. I Googled a bit and I found couple forums that replaces Applanet.
