rolf wroteI thought that was in response to the new member, who, as first posts, opened 3 threads, all with the same exact post, asking why his PSN account did not work.
(If I was to take a guess, I'd say it's because of his connection, which is probably also the reason why he posted the same message 3 times).
But there are definitely some persons who come here with a barely dissimulated attitude of wanting to "hire a geek for free". I used to get angry at them, especially when I bothered answering and did not receive any follow up. Now I've kinda learned to ignore them.
Man you are SO correct!
Awesome idea!! We should filter the users from the beginning, only get the creme de la creme. All those ignorants bastards looking for information, help or simply sharing their interest in technology should be banned. We will create the first ever community where you have to deserve your membership.

We should have all the current members pass a test. Those who don't get the perfect score would get banned automatically. While we're at it, we should also ban the gamers and close the gaming section. They're stupid anyway.

My dream is that one day the forum will stop being the nice and friendly place it is today, and turn into an elitist place where 4 or 5 pretentious douches could hang out and show the world their superiority. It would be so much better! I would be proud to be part of such a community!

PS: I honestly like the idea of forcing new members to read the rules of the forum, but that's outside the scope of this topic.

Haha man you're scaring me!
Guys most of you are only discussing generalities except rahmu who is addressing the gaming section issue. Many of you were pissed from this section anyway and it is all in the administrator's hands to close the section or not. Yet again we can have some sort of a test for gamersto check their knowledge. But this would need some sort of a categorization for the acceptance tests. For example if someone succeeded in the gaming test but failed the programming one then he wont be able to post anything in the programming section. I know this might be limiting the forum a bit but i am only giving an idea, it depends if you want to filter the users from "zero" or just offer the tests after they login/register.
Honestly, I'm against filtering users for anything but bots.

Can't we just delete the useless threads and give the members a warning and after 3 warnings banned for a month or two.

Keep in mind extra forum options like reputation, thread rating etc.. will mean Samer has to patch them in.

m0ei wroteA question related to the rules ?
I second this proposition... This would be the best thing to ensure that the rules have been read!
Something like "There is a clearly misspelled word in the forum rules or a hidden code word. Enter that word in the following box". The makes sure people have read the entire forum rules.
That's an interesting idea, about the misspelled word, but the user might run the rules through a spell checker. Maybe something else that would not be detected by a spell checker. Or how about one or two questions randomly selected from a set of question about the forum rules, sort of like a small quiz.
That should also discourage some users who register only to post a question they have, as registration will demand more effort (we should warn before registration that they will have to take a "little quiz").
There will still remain users who post questions they should be solving themselves. But I think their problem is not not knowing the rules, but rather not applying them.
But the proposed idea stays a good idea, I think.
BTW, this is starting to look like the logo revision thread :D

Design by committee at it's best!

Seriously though, I think we're all annoyed by the people who register then ask an uninteresting question pertaining to a concern they have, and they could have solved by searching google or on these forums, then seemingly disappear without contributing anything to the forums, sometimes not even a thank you when someone assists them.
I think it's only fair, and even our duty as educated people, to protect the forums and their visitors (and even the World at large) and users from such persons. Let them learn to do their research themselves.
I think that new members should not be allowed to ask (or start a new topic) before answering or posting in 3 already exiting topics... and useless posts will be deleted and will not count...
Samer99 wroteI think that new members should not be allowed to ask (or start a new topic) before answering or posting in 3 already exiting topics... and useless posts will be deleted and will not count...
But that will involve a lot more moderation, because people will post useless things to increase their post count past the threshold.
i suggest you ask this question to someone wanting to register :" have you checked "i agree" in the lebgeeks forum etiquette?"
if he sais yes, then he should be rejected because there's no "i agree" button in the etiquette,
if he clicks no, then he should pass the pythagore test to ensure he is a geek, but the pythagore theory is a lesson for 7th graders, so it's not hard enough, the question should be something about common pc knowledge, hackthissite.org could be a great source of inspiration
