Update #1 : I underestimated Unity, the keyboard shortcut it provides are insane.
Nice. Thanks for sharing... The screenshot looks cool! Hopefully will get it downloaded/installed tonight.
Been using it for 2 days now, and I'd say its getting better all the MAC OS Like features when opening applications and new scroll bar design and fancy menus. BUT I always prefer the classic desktop with all its menus :p ...

By the way I liked the way it asks you to fill and finish the information ex. setting up the time, account and personal settings while installing (simultaneously) and also you can view the installation progress in a small rectangle shell to see whats really going on under the hood.

I bet 12.04 would be nice cause it will be LTS and many people at work can rely on.

*** I would also like to add regarding Classic ubuntu desktop is that you are not entitled to use the new ubuntu unity mode in 11.04.The good thing is that you can login back to classic mode during the Login Screen, by choosing which mode that suits you classic or classic(no effects) or ubuntu (unity). So you can be jailbroken from unity if you don't like it :)

Below is a screenshot of the modes you can use:

Update #3 : Although not specific to Ubuntu, GTK is quite weak, it seriously needs more work on the design level.

Update #4 : Can anyone confirm whether 11.04 is still stuck with GTK+ 2x or 3?
Ubuntu successfully installed beside windows 7 through Wubi.

First impression :

Display problem on SONY Vaio series solved - 1920*1080 is now displayed correctly.
Lightning fast to start and shutdown. (Never seen something this fast).
No major improvements to the UI.

I thought that unity would be used by default... but no, it's not. How to turn it on and use it ?

I tried using the unity command from the terminal and i got this message:
Initializing bailer options...done
Initializing detection options...done
Initializing composite options...done
Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: Software rendering detected
Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session
bazinga@ubuntu:~$ Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
The screen flickered for few seconds and the default shell was restored.

EDIT:
AHH. There it is. I found it...
3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for NVIDIA cards. Required if you want to run Unity.

This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of NVIDIA graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards.

You need to install this driver if you wish to use the Unity desktop, enable desktop effects, or run software that requires 3D acceleration, such as some games.
Consider updating your Nvidia driver ^.^
Georges when you update your driver it'll run by default. When you do that I'll send you the wallpaper with shortcuts.

Kassem I'll get you a cd with me.
xterm, please bring an iso image with you. I'd like to have it as well.

ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.4-0ubuntu2 The GTK+ graphical user interface library

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess it will be released along Gnome 3 on the next LTS version.

*** I read that a lot of people are having trouble upgrading to Gnome 3, and it will break unity as far as I've read.
ali.koubeissi wrotexterm, please bring an iso image with you. I'd like to have it as well.
I have this version ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso in case anyone wants the 64bit version.

@Kassem : I was able to download 7 GB of tutorials for you in the past 5 days. Hope they're enough :)

@Everyone else : If you want softwares, music, videos, etc... i'll be sharing what i have. Let me know what you want by PM and i'll bring it with me tomorrow :)

I thought the next LTS wasn't till 13.04? [3 year cycle?]

Something I hated on 10.11 was how unity consumed some shortcuts that I had already setup to work with other applications. Then I saw they got the Dock/Docky team to join the project and was hoping for something big from them, looks like they might have delivered.

If anyone has already downloaded the 32bit one can they bring it along to the meet tomorrow?

You get full control over the unity panel through shortcuts, and what's even better is that you get major control over your workspaces as well including window docking.

Here's a summary:

Update #5 : The software center got even better. It seems they've really expanded the canonical repositories, I could even 1-click install E17. I'm not quite sure if this had already been there, but software center has reviews as well on each application, it always helps to see what others have to say before you download and install.
