cool down imadthemad. The way I see it is that 3G is just a transition phase (so we could shut up and stop complaining) until we get the anticipated broadband internet we've all been dreaming of, and that is once the fiber optics network gets finalized which is supposed to happen by the end of next year. Until then, don't even think of getting any "super-speedy & affordable" internet connection, unless you're willing to do the smart thing and travel away from Lebanon. :)

2. Writing Guidelines
Always post in proper English and use a spell+grammar checker. This means, no SMS-style language, no elementary spelling mistakes and no excessive punctuation.

In case you feel obliged to post in Arabic, make sure you use Arabic characters, you can use tools like Yamli, Google Ta3reeb or Microsoft Maren to make the job easier. Writing Arabic in latin characters (Akala el waladou al toufaha) is strictly forbidden - instead, write: أكل الولد التفاحة

I notice only now, one big point Nahhas missing - 3G also need local links capacity, and cannot operate without it.
Also not many people need true mobility on laptops, wifi enough for most.

i only have a lebanese passport... but i don't understand why that's the only option if the government is less than satisfactory...
the way i see it, it's not me that's got to go...

p.s. sorry i got in a heated up rant, but it is personal... i think if we dont show them that its personal we'll never get what we want...they're always going to give as little as they can and take as much as they can as long as we're not pushed over our limit...personally, i'm pushed over the limit...

when he says disastrous consequences, he's not talking about jamming or slowing up the networks...He's talking about the extra 30$ per month i cough up for extra bandwidth...I have some rich friends who are paying 150+$ per month on crossing bandwidth limits and they don't even know its because 10$ per GB is way too much...Too much money will be lost if they make it 2$\GB (which is still not exactly cheap by world standards)...And yes, for a small number of people, that will lead to disastrous consequences...

I do not want to sway the discussion to a political one, but you're blaming the wrong person here. It's not up to the minister to decide on the prices, that would be the Council's job (the most influential in this case is the minister of finance). Moreover, I believe the minister is doing a great job, but the problem is with others trying to hinder everything he does (Yes I'm talking about Abdel Menhem Yussef). Once a new government is formed - if they ever manage to do so - Abdel Menhem is definitely going to be fired for all the bad things he's done to the telecom sector over the past few years, and then we can finally start to see some progress.

P.S: I know you guys do not want to take political sides and all that, but I personally cannot ignore the fact that there is someone trying to do what's best for the sector, while the other is trying to ruin everything because of a stupid political conflict. Whoever is hurting the sector should be held responsible and exposed to the public.

I don't know much politics so what you said was kind of light-shedding to me.
I just had certain expectations when i heard alfa and mtc's contracts ran out and i read that a sincere effort was being made to fix lebanon's telecom sector. It's not very sincere if we're still paying more than we should be.
And it's not that i'm blaming the minister, but can someone explain to me what the minister meant by "disastrous consequences"?
I have some guesses, tell me if any or all of them are true:
A) The minister or someone is worried that lebanese people will be downloading too much copyright data, and frowns upon copyright infringement and p2p warez.
B) Our new top-of-the-line technology can't handle the heavy bandwidth consumption that will result if we are offered unlimited bandwidth.
C) There is a quota or cap on the amount of internet bandwidth that lebanon is alloted (by GDS or someone?), and is worried the quota is not enough to offer the lebanese people unlimited internet.

I think if i can get a straight honest answer as to what was meant by "disastrous consequences", i will be able to rest in peace knowing i was mistaken, and that the government is actually doing everything it can to help the telecom sector in lebanon.

Here's the answer to your question about the "disastrous consequences":

What government are you talking about? We currently have no government and that is one of the main issues that I'm afraid could delay the launch of the 3G services.
