The Lebanese will have access to mobile phones of third generation (3G) in the coming months, said Minister of Telecommunications Charbel Nahas resigned Wednesday night on television.

The investments needed for this project correspond to one month's revenue, said Nahas. They allow to 900,000 users connect to the Internet from their mobile devices at speeds 20 to 40 times higher than that now provides subscription Internet DSL service for a computer.

The contracts of two operators who manage networks of mobile Lebanon come to an end Jan. 31, but they assume the continuity until the formation of a new government.
The outgoing minister holds a press conference Friday to detail the plan for implementation of 3G and announce the names of major suppliers and service providers selected following a tender launched in October.

It kinda makes you wonder, if 3G gets here and we get 20-40 times faster speed than DSL and have to wait for the faster speeds to come, I wouldn't mind plugging my phone to the computer for online use via 3G :P

I would do that two...
But the problem is: What if you can only download like 25MB/month
Kind of sucks and there will be no use for 3G
The only solution that remains will be to manifest and demand for UNLIMITED 3G connection

I will start by I have no problems with Nahas or with anyone else.

But i would like to point out one thing. I hate it when MINISTERS talk the way demonstrated below:

What is this supposed to mean?
20 to 40 times higher ? Is it 20 or fu**** 40? There's a big difference here !

Guys chill, I agree with you somewhat, but take into consideration how hard it is to work in ministries, especially with the current situation.

Are we not forgetting that the minister is in a temporary position now since the government is resigned and a new one is being formed? So how could he make assumptions of what might come?

Don't let yourself dream about 3G... knowing lebanese minister it will cost high and we will all "nenbe5e3"

The current ministers cannot take major decisions because the government cannot do meetings. But that doesn't mean they cannot do anything at all. Decisions and plans to introduce 3G and broadband internet were taken prior to government resignations. Therefore, when 3G is ready, the minister is capable of launching the service because that doesn't require a government decision.

But guys'/gals i dont get how are we going to have 3G while our ADSL plans are the same so basically the Lebanese International backbone has been increased.
Shouldn't it be the opposite? To the home and businesses first then mobile devices?

UMTS, using 3GPP, supports maximum theoretical data transfer rates of 45 Mbit/s (with HSPA+)

Yeah--there is a disconnect here. What needs to happen is that around the same time they release 3G, they have to increase the speeds/limits on Dsl. If they don't do that (assuming they don't make super expensive), they will put a lot of pressure on the wireless networks and will probably slow the connection to no better than dial up.

maybe cause they dont have to lay the cables everywhere, so they can provide it faster and maybe cheaper?

I was discussing that with Kassem before, but maybe it could be CDMA2000 using. Knowing that we already use EDGE a pre-3G standard.
It seems that CDMA200 is used in the US mostly and UMTS in Europe so we may use it too. There should be some kind of a report from the minister detailing the technology used. Thats is if it really is a serious thing.
