  • Apple's Steve Jobs takes medical leave

(CNN) -- For the second time in two years, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is taking leave of absence from the company because of a medical condition, according to a letter Jobs sent to Apple employees.

"At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company," Jobs says in the letter.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, will take control of the company in Jobs' absence. Jobs says he has "great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011."

Is the drop in Apple stock directly caused by the announcement that Steve Jobs was going on medical leave? If that's true (I don't think it is), it would indicate that a significant part of Apple's value is due to Jobs' charisma. I find that fascinating from a psychological standpoint!

In any way, we can hope that he recovers soon.
In stock markets, "risk aversion" is a huge factor in deciding where the value of the stock goes.
I read on wikileaks that Job has AIDS.... that's why he HAS to take vacation

You mean EncyclopediaDramatica? Yeah, sure.

I read long time ago (i don't remember where) that Steve Jobs has Cancer... That's why he's skinny.

This also explains the 2nd leave for Jobs in the past 2 years...
This already happened in 2004 when he underwent his surgery to remove the tumor from his pancreas, later in 2008 when he took his leave of absence for a liver transplant.

The Apple shares dropped by 6% due to his medical leave absence.

"Shares in technology giant Apple dropped as much as 6% in New York trading, after boss Steve Jobs took indefinite medical leave" - BBC News.

This shows as pointed before how much of an impact Steve Jobs has on Apple.

Let's hope next time he appears (most probably for launch of the second version of the iPad) he won't be even skinnier then he is now.

If it is so - medics did huge crime.
Medicine used to suspend AIDS also damage liver, so possible they transplant him liver. But by some rules it is forbidden to give transplant for people who have AIDS.
I think he really has cancer.

I hope everything will be ok, because he is most prominent person in IT, and he did a lot of inventions.
P.S. I hate Apple, they are evil as all corporations, but Steve Jobs is inventor, and as a person is very valuable for this world.

I don't quite agree with you...
Stevie is just shark who just wants to license everything, he may be the best corporate executive but IMO he's evil
You know since apple can't make as much money as window's so they have to sell other things for a higher price so they can pay their employee and job can afford medecine for new transplantation and for treatments for the HIV: AIDS :D
Why is he evil? Because he doesn't give away free stuff? Because he releases new versions of products soon? Because he doesn't release OSX as a standalone OS ?

How is that evil for the love of God someone tell me. It's standard business procedures, it's everywhere, neither Apple nor Microsoft are evil. If people don't like this approach, you have dozens of alternatives, enough with the claims and stupid preaching that OSS and FSF are biblical and angelical.

(Sorry proners, that wasn't intended for you personally)
I agree with xterm, free stuff is awesome I love it but doing business and putting your own prices is anyone's right in this world, anyone is free not to buy if he/she does not like the price tag or the product itself. But that doesn't make the corporation evil except if they are stealing people's money, making people buy by force, and making money through illegal means, thats what is called evil really.

As for Steve Jobs, I hope that he will get better and I really admire him as a person. He is an inventor who changed the world and I am always inspired by his awesome presentation skills, I hope one I day I can do presentations the way he does.
Steve Jobs was CEO or cofounder (forgot, look it up) at Pixar too. Don't just tie him to Apple (though it lately started defining who he was).
I really hope he's going to be OK.

Love him or hate him, you have to admit Jobs is the most exciting person in the tech world today.

I do not like Apple that much, but I have to agree with you on this one. I'm even thinking of buying a MacBook Pro (and probably an iPad) this summer.

Given your avatar, I'd say this is a nice understatement :)

LOL. I put this avatar back when Apple was in war with Adobe. You do know I'm all for Flash, it saves my ass everytime I get stuck with JavaScript (although I'm starting to get along with JS recently) :)

yeap that' true :)..

anyway, all corporate sharks are evil :D, almost... they do whatever they have to, run over people, businesses, and humans best interests in order to achieve higher stock prices, and happy stockholders :P

but the reason, i said steve jobs is evil, is that he is hated by his employees and he is pain in the ass(maybe because he is a perfectionist, then i can't blame him :P),
more importantly, he declined to donate money for good causes unlike other billionaires such as bill gates, etc... i guess he will be taking this money to the grave with him :P sooner or later...

but that doesn't mean i don't respect him, but i don't care for his well-being either
