I have this HP Laptop Pavillion 6000s series and it's been turning off out of the blue for the past few days.
The laptop is always plugged into the wall since its kinda stationary now and the battery inside it is pretty weak. I ran the HP battery check and it needs to be replaced since its capacity is close to non-existent, making the operating system always listing it as 'charging'.
My concern however is the fact that the laptop turns off suddenly when plugged in and with battery inside. I've ran it a whole night plugged in without the battery and it looked fine. I'll try to keep this setup for the next couple days to see how it will work.
Can a defective battery be the cause of this turn off even though in theory, the laptop should be using the AC input to function?
These HP laptops are constantly hot so its no point trying to detect an overheating problem since you can't tell the overheating from normal temperature condition. One thing to note is that the turn offs happen really randomly and the only applications that are being used are some browser games and random office documents.

My guess is the battery is defective as you suggested. I think the battery is not allowing the current to pass through to the computer, disrupting the circuit. Since when you remove the battery, all is fine. Anyway, you should buy a new battery, since this one is too weak to support your computer.

I feel your pain man :P
I own a HP pavilion dv5-1155e(that i Bought 2 years ago) and I hate the Ventilation system that HP designed on that series. The Battery Always heats up fast even if you're running the simplest of applications :/
I usually always keep it on AC-plug(since I considered my laptop a "desktop-replacement") and whenever I go to Uni(from my house to there or from Break to classes) I've always had the habit to simply put it on "sleep"(since before 7 Vista took a long time to start up).. 2 years later, after all that heat and sleep, my battery finally gave in, at first my laptop would run alone not-plugged in(even when the battery status bar indicated I had 70% left) then turn off suddenly, progressing on It wouldn't turn on/stay on without the plug. Final solution, new battery, $60
TL;DR buy a new battery :D

I also have a DV5 Series HP Laptop. Where can i find a battery with such a price since HP in Lebanon asks about 150-200$ for the cost of the battery ?
