  • Laptop - Macbook Pro vs Vaio vs ....

I'm currently looking to get a new laptop ...

I like mac but i think for the price i can get a laptop PC with more features ( mainly HDMI, Blu ray burner, better graphics card etc..)

but every laptop has some bad sides ... i was set on sony vaio i forgot the name of the series but then i realized it doesnt even have a DVD player ! and most great laptops have shitty battery lives

Is mac really my only option for an all rounder?? any suggestions ?
I am a mac and PC user. Mac laptops beat PC laptops. Sorry for that, but it is true. Even windows on mac is better than windows on a pc laptop. i have a 13.3" macbook and battery lasts 5 hours. specs: intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz, 2GB DDR3, 250GB HDD, DVD Writer, Nvidia GT330, 13.3" LED, Webcam, mini display port (need converter if you want to connect to HDMI), wireless N, laptop plastic quality perfect not like those shitty acer or toshiba or HP.
Depends on what you're planning to do I guess, if it isn't heavy gaming/Video editing I guess Mac can do the trick.. but if you plan on performing power-needy tasks then I suggest getting HP/Toshiba(Vaio is better, but a bit overpriced)

@MrClass

not that I'm not with your opinion, but how much did you buy that Mac for?(for comparative reasons off course) the specs sound descent but the weak points are : 13.3"(a bit small don't you think?), 2GB DDR3(these days it would be a good idea to get 3GB+ since apps are getting more demanding)

again, it's all about what you plan on doing...
got it for 1300$ here in lebanon. of course 4GB of Ram may sound more appealing, but 2GB is not bad at all. 13.3" is great. I play warcraft on it, and it looks good. and by the way, i have zero heat. Like Z E R O heat. Try to beat that with a pc :P

Amen for that.
Alienware laptops have 1 disadvantage here in lebanon. Repair Shops. None of them exist here.

Back to the topic, I also vote for Vaio Laptops. I currently own a VPCF1190X. I purchased it from the U.S 5 months ago for 1300 $ (additional customizations included). NOW, in Lebanon, the same laptop costs around 2200 $ (Not even customized).

This laptop beats every other laptop in its category! Performance, Reliability, Never heats up, Design, Display, Battery life (~5 hours on heavy use).

I heard Vaio's were crap. And I even saw it in my sister's old laptop. It's crap. She moved to Toshiba and she's much happier. Or maybe it felt like crap because it was Vista...

Vaio's are definitely not crap! It's most likely windows Vista, it's too "heavy". I've noticed a lot of improvement on my HP dv9000 once I removed Vista and installed Windows7.

May I ask where you got it from? It's hard to find them for these prices nowadays.
And I vote Mac.
well i work at a school as IT. so i get special prices on all mac hardware

Oh okay, but where do you buy them from?
Interlink, official Apple retailer
alienware was part of my initial choice but i felt that it's appearance was a bit bulky .... although prices to specs were off the charts ... vaio series F was almost my choice except i noticed the crappy battery life ... anyone knows the battery life on the alienware (m115x)
unforgiven wroteVaio series F was almost my choice except i noticed the crappy battery life ...
Vaio Batteries aren't that bad. I own one and i'm satisfied with it. And on the long run, Vaio Laptops have a battery care plan. and there batteries preserve their original capacity.
the vaio z series is great ! good battery life ( around 5 hour ) , good specs , ssd .the problem is that it dosen' t read /write bluray

For the price of a z I can get a MacBook pro :p
Macs have elegant hardware implementations but at the expense of Performance/Value..
ie for the price you can have a much more powerful Windows laptop.
The Macs have great screens.. so if you are into photography, graphic design then go for it
However, if you like gaming, don't come near a Mac.. the 310M and 330M chips are nothing compared to the Geforce 280M/360M and Radeon 5850/5870 chips

I was facing the same tough choice as you... Then I went for the super elegant Dell Studio 17 (i7 720qm, Radeon 4650, an awesome RGB LED Screen, bluray, hdmi) check it out!! But if you do insist on getting the 130W power adapter instead of the inadequate 95W one

Peace..
Is There Any Shop That Sells Alienware Here In Lebanon ????

hey i was checking the dell studio lineup... it's quite impressive but i don't want a 17 inch laptop ... i tried the 15 but the options i want (basically a decent graphics card) weren't available ...

what i want is a good battery life , high end graphics , high end screen and an i5 processor (bluray disc burner is a plus too )
unforgiven wrotewhat i want is a good battery life , high end graphics , high end screen and an i5 processor (bluray disc burner is a plus too )
Hi, well you remind me of the criteria I had when I set out to buy a new laptop and of the hard reality I came to face :) :

Unfortunately, high end graphics and battery life don't go hand in hand. On the other hand the i5 is battery-friendly. So my advice is to go by priority.

Since you are going for an i5 instead of an i7 then you don't need a 17 incher as you said.. (because an i7 requires a large chassis for proper cooling anyway).

If you like gaming, ASUS is the way to go IMHO Screens should be ok, unless you are into photo-editing

Don't get me wrong, the new iMac line is very impressive, very chic hardware.. But no blu-ray, no hdmi, low-mid graphics and $$$$$$$$$$ :))
