Ill be arriving from the states in a week and would like to know if vonage works on a 1mb sodetel plan? If somebody has tried it because i am stuck on getting vonage or ooma trying to see if anybody eles has tried them in lebanon before i plan to buy any of the voip products.
well i know that magicjack, gizmo project and some other voip solutions use around 10kb/s up and down connection so with a 1mbps connection you will be fine. but the problem is that most certainly vonage is banned from being used on lebanese networks, you need to look for a vpn or something else to make it work.
vonage is banned from being used on lebanese networks
Is this just an assumption or are you sure about it? I know Magic Jack is blocked, but what is your source on Vonage being blocked?
im just assuming that VoIP solutions in general are banned in Lebanon, thats why I say most certainly.
You could wait for someone else or try doing a Google search to see if someone else has addressed this problem or if there isn't any problem at all.
My sister is already in lb and she is using magic jack and it works fine she said they blocked voip for a while and brought it back. but my question is would vonage work on the speed that she has of 1mb cause i don't want to keep plugging in magicjack in my laptop all the time.
do you alredy have vonage enabled? if you do download a bandwidth meter program such as networx (Thats the one I use.) Use Vonage and keep track of bandwidth it uses. I know that magicjack uses around 10kb/s down and up.
So you should be fine if its not banned, I myself use those with a 1mbps connection and they work great.
The only problem you might face is the latency, try checking with your sister you see if she is having any lag issues while talking.

It doesn't require much bandwidth, I know that skype can work fine on a 56K modem – however, the huge bottleneck you'll have in Lebanon is latency, which might result in frequent sound cuts.
