  • Apple overtakes Microsoft to become world's biggest technology company

...and people still call Microsoft : M$
Haha now Bill gates is finally going to start sweating.
Windows is just not keeping up with apple on innovation. Windows is as exiting as a tax return form. Yet people use it because they must, just as they have to fill tax returns.
I think apple are a bit overvalued on the stock market, but if they play it all right, they can become the next leader, an un-moveable giant. But I wouldn't bet on it, Apple has a history of messing up.
I'd like Apple if they release OS X outside the scope of Apple hardware.

P.S.: Without hacks.
Congrats to Apple. I've always been a fan. And I agree with xterm, they need to release OS X to other systems.
The only reason why I hate Apple is because they have an extremely closed system. Even if you wanted to develop applications for their products you have to get Apple hardware... and that just sucks!

Other than that, I have to give credit where it's due. I've tried out my friend's iPod a few days ago, and I was amazed by how smooth its touch-screen functionality is, and the games/applications are just amazing... I still hate that huge piece of crap called iPad though.

Let's just hope Steve Jobs would come back to his senses and port his software for non-Apple hardware. Or maybe, Microsoft would step up to the challenge and work hard on their OS.
Kassem wroteOr maybe, Microsoft would step up to the challenge and work hard on their OS.
What's wrong with their OS ?
Kassem wroteOr maybe, Microsoft would step up to the challenge and work hard on their OS.
Do you really think that Microsoft don't know how to build a light OS. A very light one !
But they don't want to. Because if they did, explain to me the need of new and improved hardware to support the new Operating Systems (from RAMs, CPUs to Graphic Cards, etc...).
Hardware technology and development will stop at a certain point. And they don't want to do that.

And I Just wonder what would happen if Microsoft decided to shutdown all their operating systems?
Will the world survive for 1 Day ? 1 Hour ? or even 1 Minute ?
Stop mocking Microsoft. It rules the world !
Comparing Microsoft and Apple is like comaring oranges and ... apples :-/ One is a software company, the other is a hardware company.

Plus the article is misleading. When they say 'biggest' they mean in market volume which only represents the market's trust in this company (think demand to get Apple's share). In terms of pure turnover (money generated), both Microsoft and Apple are far from being the top. IBM produced more money in 2009 than Apple and Microsoft together. HP is even bigger than IBM.
What's wrong with their OS ?
ARRRRRGH!!!
EddieEC wroteCongrats to Apple. I've always been a fan. And I agree with xterm, they need to release OS X to other systems.
Apple are conscious about their "apple experience", this is why they tightly control everything that touches their OS, like software or hardware. Imagine OSX running on a Dell Laptop. In my opinion, it wont look as good. But I might be wrong.

You need to look at it from a different angle. I think Rahmu made a very interesting remark once by saying that Apple want to make their product come as a whole as if you're using an Apple Machine not a computer with OS X on it (like you take a gaming console as a whole).

I've been using a mac for 3 years, it suits me well, but I do understand why some people cannot stand it. what irritates me though are the people bashing Apple machines without even trying one for at least a week - I should probably take a deep breath and refrain from feeding the troll :)
I've yet to be given a decent argument as to why Windows is bad.

Here are the arguments that fail miserably:

1- It's expensive.
2- It's not open source
3- It can be infected with viruses
4- It can be hacked
5- It has the BSoD

Please give me a compelling argument as to why you think 90% of the people that use computers around the world are idiots.

Just because you don't like it or you don't like Microsoft, or your best friend says bad things about it or you want to be 'cool', doesn't make it a bad operating system.

P.S.: Windows has its downsides, but I've yet to see anyone actually mention some worthy of completely scratching the reason to use it.

Edit: Swapped "Operating Systems" with the word "Windows".

Apple machines are great, though we cannot deny the fact that the major reason you purchase an apple computer/laptop is for OS X.

Edit: 'You' as in the majority.

You're honestly asking this question? You do know why 90% of the people who use a computer around the world have Windows on their machine (I do not think they're idiots). It is very simple: Because their machines come with Windows installed on it! They get used to Windows and then never try anything else, assuming they actually know there's some other OS's out there.

That's a given yes, but irrelevant to the question at hand.
I don't feel like trolling about Windows but here's what I personally dislike about it.

First of all, and above everything else, I hate the registry. I never knew what it was, never understood it. It's scary and stupid. In comparison, Unix uses plain text files that can be commented. It helps a lot and makes it easier to tinker with.

Another thing I dislike about Windows is the extensive use of the GUI. No matter how good and shiny it looks, you cannot deny that GUI is a limitation when it comes to administration. Try something as simple as renaming multiple files, you'll know what I mean. Comparing Point & click interfaces to regex, pipes and streams is like comparing an army knife to a bazooka.

And don't dare mentioning the pathetic cmd prompt that comes with Windows (still ?). You know that its use is extremely limited in Windows env.

Another thing about Windows. I have nothing to back this out except for my own user experience, but I get the feeling that processes are poorly managed. A great thing about Ubuntu is that when an application crashes, it rarely takes down the whole system. Maybe I'm wrong but I had the impression that this happens a lot on Windows.

Windows grow old very easily. Granted, this is probably due to bad usage by unaware users, but Windows becomes slow after a few months of use. Not saying that other OS are perfect (far from it), but I don't think they're as bad as Windows.

Finally the open source thing. Here's my problem with it. Microsoft has stopped providing support for Windows 2000 and didn't release the sources. Which means that in other words, people who spent money (and companies who spent thousands of dollars) back in the days have a completely useless product today. In comparison, I am more confident that Linux will still be supported in 10-20 years. Sure I'll have to deal with (pain-in-the-ass) upgrades, but at least it'll be free and I won't feel as a slave to one company.

These are my main concerns with Windows. There are other small things I dislike, but I'm far from saying it's a bad OS. Frankly, if it was free (of cost), I would use it. At least try it. I just don't feel like spending 200$+ on an operating system!!

I cannot hide though, that I am interested in the .NET platform. Maybe one day...
This is all acceptable and relative, It would be silly for me to tell you that you're wrong. Operating Systems are like food, it's relative. The issue at hand is how people are dismissing windows for the wrong damn reasons, personal dislikes are personal dislikes.

Anyways, to comment on each point:
rahmu wroteFirst of all, and above everything else, I hate the registry. I never knew what it was, never understood it. It's scary and stupid. In comparison, Unix uses plain text files that can be commented. It helps a lot and makes it easier to tinker with.
Think of registry as a front-end to configurations. That's all it is, next time you're on or close to a windows system, open the registry and export any folder or key, then open within a text file. Yes it's ugly.

You can do all the mentioned tasks in the prompt which brings me to my next point:

You can do virtually anything in the command prompt that you can do in windows, think of windows as a front-end to the prompt, just as gnome and other desktop/window manager are. There's a killer application that does NOT come with windows by default.

It's called "Powershell". look it up.

That did happen alot in earlier versions, but it's very rare if ever on recent versions. If you can't stand the task manager, open up a command prompt, type in tasklist, get the PID or the name and use taskkill to shut it down. (Or you could easily pipe)

100%

That's just how business goes, sorry.

Then i don't think you fall into the list of people that dismiss it totally.

Simply because, .NET is very powerful and great.
Is there a place for a new Operating System anyway? Something that aspires to absolute simplicity?
Something that does nothing but load an xterm [edit](no not our resident xterm)[/edit] , the second you switch it on.

How about a vector based operating system (no bitmaps)? It would scale nicely to your resolution :)
What are the people researching Operating Systems doing anyway these days? They're NOT researching windows and linux. They're researching cloud computing, cloud servers, and a bunch of network distributed micro kernels.

Will Microsoft Linux ever be released?

Negative and Negative equals ?
I was just taking the progression normally. We're not equating stuff in here.
