Lebanon is a small village compared to Europe or USA, they don't really care whether Lebanese can buy their games or not, it's as simple as that.
and that is why we buy the pirated ones...
First of all, who told you that? trust me if they don't want to support our "village" they won't just like PSNetowrk..etc
Also we are one of the leaders in the area in terms of online business, software development and technology fields in general(this is one of the main reasons why we should have a better internet by the way!)
euryale wrotewow what`s wrong with pirated software? i think it`s the best thing that happened on the internet! i still don`t understand why some of you people insist on feeding capitalism and our big enemy! let them rot and sink; i think everyone should use pirated software and chinese stuff (it`s just as good as the original and for cheaper so why not?) down down with the imperialist pigs!!!don`t be close minded and stop the hipocrisy.. the only way to beat the system is to let it starve!; people should fight for whats best for them not for company`s pockets! ps buying original copies won`t get u a good internet in lebanon
Well you can fight "imperialism" by supporting other products (chinese, open source...call it whatever you like!) but not by STEALING them! cuz by this you are just like them!
arithma wroteIt's a very sad truth, why are you so surprised?
If they want me to pay for the software, they're going to have to make me. Protection, security, encryption...
You may judge as much as you want, but the guy right next to me may have an edge over me just because they use pirated software. That's just for starters.
Ethics won't really do you any good.

It may be wrong, but it's the same as picking up 2000LL off the ground. There's no real consequence.
First of all, the guy next to you may have the edge probably cuz he is better than you! software is only a tool so don't make it an excuse.

And unfortunately, I do realize that this (sad truth) is how things work most of the time. :-)
But I decided to be ethical as much as I can, instead of going with the flow.
nuclearcat wroteAnd first fight - stop _USING_ non-free software and try to collaborate in opensource development.
Well, they are fighting it by using it and not pay! :-D

I really want to see what you will do if someone stole your business (stealing not competing!)
They know even how to use thiefs...
First thing they will do, when Lebanon will need big loan or anything else good, RIAA, BSA will come to US govt and tell "NO. They use pirated software".
Example? Russia. They want to join WTO, but they loose. Even they did many new very restrictive laws and putting now even sysadmins who is installing pirated windows to jail - they are not accepted to "club".
But the price of windows does not take in consideration the cost of living. For example, for US citizen, $100 migh be nothing, but for people from Cuba, or some African countries, $100 is worth a year of salary!
How will these people get any chance to enjoy the tools that the rest of the "developed world" are using?

1- a 100$ is something in the US
2- for african people who make a 100$ a year...they don't afford having a PC at first place...and if they do, then they should go for Linux OSs.

I mean come on people! if you can't afford it, go for the alternative!
Samer can you move all posts talking about Piracy to a new thread to keep this one only about Broadband latest news in lebanon?
How will these people get any chance to enjoy the tools that the rest of the "developed world" are using?
Open source, open source, open source ... How many times do we have to say this?

If people cannot afford Windows they shouldn't go ahead and steal it. I know I am not the only one to use exclusive open source software in my work. It is perfectly viable.

And even admitting that Microsoft's products are better than the open source ones (who come from a long line of 40 years of UNIX hacking and researching, but still ...), you do not steal the products. It would be like stealing a brand new Mercedes because you cannot afford it and you don't quite like Peugeots...

I am sure that once you realize how much technology and power is given away entirely for free (and I don't mean simply the cost, but the code and the intellectual surplus too), no one would be quick to dismiss open source.
i just moved for ksa, we had a 256k connection with an unlimited download qouta, that was great for me as i am a big fan of the itunes appstore, and stream lots of youtube videos and play online a lot, i am currently subscibed to 256k wise connection with a 3gb download 3gb up qouta..this is bullshit cuz they dont even offer free night trafic.......2mbps speeds with 200gb+ qouta would do gr8 for me
256k connection in KSA? I thought they had up to 16Mb connections there... am I right or what?
Kassem wrote256k connection in KSA? I thought they had up to 16Mb connections there... am I right or what?
Correction, up to 20Mb....my parents are in KSA, we have a 4Mb connection, with download rate ~ 400Kbps!

Yep thats true. My uncle lives there and he told me that he just upgraded his 7mb/s connection to a 15mb/s one.
I never thought I'd say that but... "I wish I were living in KSA" :/

Not really, because I'm sure about 80% of websites are blocked due to censorship.

-> And not because they are pr0n. Censorship can be about anything over there...

For example: "Sex is the exchange of bodily fluids"

Now lebgeeks is blocked in KSA :)

Probably not, but i hope you got what i meant.

If open source was so great everybody would be using it, and people wouldnt be paying money to put up with the buggy stuff from microsoft.

Tell me how many successful games are based on open source code? How many graphic designers use GIMP? How many animators use open source alternatives? How many architects and engineers use open source alternatives to autocad and solidworks?

And no, it's not a compatibility issue, there are interoperable formats in all these disciplines.
