Charbel Nahhas's daughter said that we should look for noticeable improvement by April 2011. I am not sure how reliable his daughter is as a source of information, but that's what she said.

By the way, On http://wise.net.lb/web/ they announce an upgrade of their 512k quota from 2.5 GB to 3 GB... I clearly hope that's not part of the global upgrade we are waiting for, because this one is ridiculous...

LOL chill man. She did not officially announce it. She simply mentioned it to a very trustworthy friend of mine who in turn told me what she said while I was nagging about the internet quota to him :)

What the F , they're talking about FTTH, charbel nahas was there, and there was no mention of what the hell is happening with the IMEWE!! It's not like fiber is going to make a difference if we still had 3Gb/s for total lebanese bandwidth!! lol

Ali Ferghani was representing the Lybian government. “We chose to implement Optical Fibre in Lybia because we realised it could give Libya a 20 year advance", he explained. "We started last year and now we have about 2500 or 3000 kilometres of optical fibre deployed. But Libya is a big country.” “The backbone will be finish this year", he said. "Then it takes 6 to 12 more month to connect directly to big cities and houses." According to Ali Ferghani, Lebanon should "try to understand what happens in the whole region, and that optical fibre is going to be a regional thing. We have interest in being together. Also be careful to learn from the example of others, from the best they did and also from their mistakes.”

At Draka communication, a leader company in automatic and telecommunication cables, they explain that they are working together with Alcatel on the backbone. "Lebanon is a small country considering
its market's size. But Lebanese government makes it interesting for us now." According to Draka, it will take about five years till everyone in Lebanon can enjoy 1 GB connections. "But for big cities or areas
of business and governmental buildings, it could take just one year after the backbone is done."

Ok does this mean that we will have 1GB and we're going to have to wait for a year? Or we will be enjoying (I hope) fast internet in February or April (according to nahas daughter)

well the way i understood that article is that lebanon is moving away from monopoly , which is great. hopefully...

FTTH considered very complicated even by advanced countries. It just lag behind a lot, because it needs huge infrastructure to keep it up.
1)It cannot be repaired fast by untrained technician like copper. It needs training and expensive fiber splicers, reflectometer, soldering station (i forgot english name) and etc.
2)Fiber is weak, when it is coming to customer apartment. If there is no proper cable trays and place to put it - it will be often broken. Also rats and mices (and i see a lot of them on the streets) love fiber.
3)It needs MUCH more expensive equipment from ISP side till customer side.

FTTB - yes, it is something, but also too expensive. Usually fiber optics kept only for connecting ISP's, and some internal backbones.

IMHO it is all money laundry. As i heard it is going to be done for Hamra only, and money spent there will be enough to give proper internet for all country. But it is rumours only... truth noone know.

يشير نحاس الى ان العمل يتم عبر محورين اساسيين هما:
- وضع السعات الجديدة في متناول المشتركين من افراد وشركات اضافة الى شركات الانترنت، على اساس تعرفات جديدة مخفضة وخدمات حديثة متنوعة، تسمح بتحقيق اختراقات كبيرة في الاستهلاك والجدوى الاقتصادية.
- استكمال هيكلة القطاع وتحصينه، امنياً ونوعياً، بهدف جعله قطاعاً اساسياً في الانتاج الاقتصادي المحلي وتعزيز دور لبنان في المنطقة. "وهكذا تطوّر في الفاعلية الاقتصادية كفيل بالخروج من الوضع القائم، اذ تشكل الضرائب والريوع ثلثي مداخيل القطاع، وكفيل ايضاً باستيعاب هذا العبء المرهق بنتيجة توسع الحجم الفعلي للقطاع وتوفير بيئة مؤاتية للانتاج والاعمال وتوفير فرص للتوظيف".
