i thought lebanon's internet was supposed to be faster and cheaper starting may 2010

are all ISPs increasing their prices or is it just cyberia?
Flakk
Wow that is annoying, why would they increase the prices ?
check if other ISP's have increased in price.
I suspect that is the plan following the announced fiber optics by the minister, but he never mentioned a price increase. If its true, internet quality may improve from may 1st. But dunno lets wait and see.
Aly
OMG what a shit, and the additional 1 GB will cost 14.99$ instead of 10.99$ ? hahahaha
Yea and some people (including me) where dreaming about this sentence "10 to 20 times faster".
But it seems that only Cyberia are doing this,
IDM have their old prices.
Terranet too.
Wise too.
Ogero, I couldn't check because their website is down (they shut down the web server when they close).

What??? Naah ogero.gov.lb is up...
What do you mean?
nuclearcat
I was expecting that. Hopefully, on another side, they can make quality better.

Alot of times when I try to access ogero.gov.lb it doesn't open especially during the night, I try to open it via a proxy and I try to check it in such websites like
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and it turns out that it is really down, after seeing ogero's website many times down it seemed to me that when the Ogero staff's shift is over they shut down all their PC sand servers and go home.
GreenM
They are supposed to improve quality without increase in prices...............................................
Raficoo
hmm interesting, "Cyberia will provide you with an improved Internet quality effective May 1st only with a slight increase on our ADSL prices."
i wonder in what way will the internet quality be "improved", but they don't mention anything about an increase in Quota so that sucks :/
hopefully this won't happen with the other ISPs(specially Ogero D: ).. but if so.. hopefully we'll get news of some quota increase sometime in the future :\
WizaRd
At least the Ogero service is currently perfect and doesn't need any kind of improvements except more quota allowance. It's just retarded to higher the prices without justification and I can almost certainly bet there won't be any change in latency/downtime for Cyberia users.
Finding more ways to suck money, that's our sad country.

GreenM wroteThey are supposed to improve quality without increase in prices...............................................
Ogero not dropping backbone prices, and not giving capacity. Usually ISP's able to do that if they are growing non-stop. Lebanese ISP's suffering right now, not growing.
nuclearcat
Flyingwizard, for sure Ogero service better.
If other ISP's able to make few % profit from income, Ogero making 5000% profit from backbone prices.
kareem_nasser
IDM didn't increase the fees.

Yes I know it is unfair how Ogero is handling things, everyone agrees on that.
I just meant I hope Ogero won't increase their prices without increasing the quota because atm the service is nice and i don't see the huge improvements cyberia is promising.
EddieEC
Ogero has the same prices, no change.
Ayman
Ogero has the same prices, no change.
True but Ogero's service is better than that of Cyberia ;)
nuclearcat
Ogero buy international bandwidth directly.
On midterranian area 1Mbit equal 316Gbyte for ~$50. Means each GB cost them $0.15, and they sell it $10 / Gb.
66 times more. They are funded also from government to build lines across the country
They sell also for ISP's capacity as $1200+. Including Cyberia. So Cyberia pays for each Gbyte ~$4. They need also to pay for DSLAM access and etc for Ogero. So it comes ~$6 more. Total is $10. They was selling "as is", zero profit. And they sell for $15 now. 1.5 times more from customers.
There is 3rd choice. Few bucks, install download dish, and u can get download over satellite. They can control their usage realtime, get proper detailed statistics, and download for $7/Gbyte at night (from 1am till 9am) at speed 256Kbit/s. Comparable $10 can give 4Mbit download speed.
Attn, this one - one-way.
It is not precise calculations, they are much more complicated. It is just for comparison.
Ah yes, majority don't want to know this details, "they just need good service". Well, as soon as they dont give a shit about such details, in fact they will live in it forever.

I'm sorry but you are very much mistaken here. Everyone knows the details even if not precise numbers. The doesn't mean we don't give a shit. You're making it sound like customers should care about private ISP by not asking for a usable service. While I respect you a lot personally, what you are saying is really bad.
First of all, this is a discussion forum. In real life, discussion forums have no value what so ever and the opinions posted by Internet users here also have no value what so ever (in other words, only other forum visitors may care about this post).
If a customer ask for something that is usable even at a minimal degree, it doesn't mean he doesn't give a shit like you are saying. On the contrary. it means he cares about the ISP.
nuclearcat
I mean customers in Lebanon rather than searching alternatives - stick to monopolists and supports him. I didn't say stick to shitty ISP's, and shitty resellers. Try to look around more.
When we(ukraine&russia) had same issue, people massively start installing satellite download and taking internet from Europe. ISP's tried to block this stuff, but they was unsuccessfull, after government notice that things going out of their hands, they drop prices significantly for internet and they allow other companies to enter market, and most significant - international Tier-1 entered country. Now you can buy 1Gbit for $1000 (corporate grade quality ) in capital city. We have also free internet(128Kbit/s) now from government funded PayTV, over satellite, comes with subscription.
Here only few "business people" did at this time and they just resell this bandwidth. None of usual people tried to move their ass to find alternatives. Cause i am actively participating in satellite business, i know well there is few countries suffering from internet in ME region, exUSSR, some in Europe. Even Europe have folks who far from civilization areas and they use sat internet. Some countries have much lower income than Lebanon.
BUT. Hundreds of thousands uses satellite internet in most of countries, means penetration is comparatively high. But just few hundreds (maximum) uses satellite in Lebanon, and majority of them do business on that. While internet in Lebanon is crappier than in all those countries.
How you can explain that?
Too difficult to buy 0.9m dish? Whole things should cost $150-$250 max. Most of people spend for restaurants more in 1 month.
Not difficult, as i see a lot of dishes. I ask local installers... most of them done just to watch porno.
It is just EASIEST suggestion i can do.
When i was working in out of reach area, i didnt spend my time with local shitty ISP's, i put dish, hook it to DVB card and rock&roll. Later on some local ISP's was BUYING FROM ME bandwidth. LOL?
Sure when prices went down, i keep dish just for backup, because sat isp's charge per usage, not like crazy terresterial ISP's.
You are turning "pure consumers" guys, not geeks. You are waiting that somebody will bring you heaven for free on the golden plate. Complaining wont help you also.
nuclearcat
And note - i dont want to mention sat internet, cause it interfere directly with interests of my current employer, it is a competitor.
But i'm just too angry that i heard only complaints and no movements for better future. I participate in few events... and sorry, it was all only talks.

We are customers, nuclearcat and we will always be only customers. Customers cannot do movements for a better future or do improvements. That's what I've been trying to say for ages. You can't expect customers to be more than customers.
