Dear All,

What is 3g? is it related to video call?

Thank you!

Regards,
Moreover, what does g stand for? is it like 1g 2g 3g? and what is our situation here in Lebanon?
Thank you for the link :)
I just wanted to know a breif summary about the difference between 2g and 3g for example bcz i hear a lot of rumours regarding 3g soon in lebanon by Alfa... any info?
For that i personally think that Zain aka MTC is gonna implement that before Alpha after the Lebanese government takes care of the infrastructure and WiMax.
3G is the 3rd Generation of celllular networks data transfer protocols.
It allows higher speed for data transfer over cellular networks. It is starting to be implemented in the developed countries in the rest of the world.
rolf thank you for the reply :)
Btw we are 2g in lebanon ?
Lets suppose Alfa or MTC launched the 3g, will we as clients feel a big difference in the speed regarding WAP/GPRS/BB. What about Video call? quality of calls will be affected ?
In leb we are at 2.5G, if I'm not mistaken BB service runs on EDGE which is 2.5G (merely a software update on the existing infrastructure.
As for 3G its like you move from dial up internet to dsl. Will it be implemented I have a lot of doubts, its very expensive to do it, and a bit stupid if we don't have capacity for regular internet usage, how will 3G be effective with no bandwidth for it.

Lets see if the new project of the telecom ministery will be realized and then we can talk about 3G.
The main difference as end user, you'll get is fast internet everywhere, but on another point of view, you're moving to a new protocol from GSM to 3G, gsm is a dying protocol, its old :)
Thanks crazy for the quick reply :d
I would like to ask you about the video call ? what is video call? is it related to 3g? and do u have any idea about its rates in general... for example in the USA?

3G is not just for internet. You can have "new" kind of services like videocalls (withing lebanon) and TV without the need to go to the internet.
i'm sure that having access to news tv channels (arabia, jazeera, ...) and sports tv channels (specially during world cup, f1 season, champions league, ...) directly from your cellphone would work quiet well in lebanon.

videocalls are simply to have a video chat with someone else via your cellphone. you see them while talking (the feature should be available on your phone model).

in UAE it's 250LL per minute for local calls.
for international videocalls, it varies based on the country, from 0.5$ to 1$ per minute

Thats great :D
even my friend in Sweden video calls costs him a lot.
video call doesn't make much sense, not many reasons to use it. if you want to show something to the other person, you can simply record the video and send it by email from your phone. if you need to have a conference call, simply use skype. but needing this on your cellphone on the go, the only use for it is sex chat.
4G networks are either being deployed (Sprint US / TeliaSonera Sweden) or tested among major telco's. Since technically, the transition from, 2G to 4G is easier than that from 2G to 3G, IMO jumping to 4G would be more beneficial. Political racketeering makes my previous statement worthless though, unfortunately..

batikh, the use of tech can rarely be predicted. At fair enough prices, im sure there would be <useful> uses... take twitter for example.
^^ video calls have been around for quiet some time now, just as mms. neither have seen great success besides their usage for sexual related stuff. it's not a prediction, that's the way it is...
once ive heard that Alfa's CEO participated in an AD talking about video call and stuff like that in lebanon... any idea?
4G.......cellphones with holograms. you know not the real things but at least on certain surfaces. + real holograms have been there since 1980s but costs LOTS of cash.

Facial expressions and seing the other persons can make a difference.
Geeks typically do not care about these things, they have a very "functional" approach.
"Normal" people do not speak together only to exchange spoken information, they do so to exchange feelings which are hidden under the conversation. Seing the other person can help, when a physical meeting is not practical.
If that's wasnt the case, nobody would be using videoconferencing on skype.
^^ i didn't say that video chats in general were useless, that's why i said that if you want to have a video chat you would use skype and not your cellphone. you don't need video chat on the go, anywhere anytime. some might, but that's not a big market.
plus, when i'm on the phone, i'm often im my pjs, undressed, having a turd, ... don't want the other to see me in these situations.
how much are you going to see on a cellphone screen?
