lixrevolution.com
available

@arithma: its nice , but the name is long . we need something that sticks to the mind with minimal spelling conflicts
i guess we should go with lebix.net or lebix.org ? what do you think guys
battikh
obelix.com :P (just joking eh)
Halla2 the thing is that it wont be the official lix website. It's just the website for the movement to push it's implementation. So no need for it to be lix.org.lb or whatever. Can be something just like project-lix.com/org, no need for something fancy.
J4D
just wondering , why shouldn't it be the official website ?
battikh
coz he/you/we don't own it. You are HELPING to push it, mainly awareness, maybe technical stuff from an initial design point of view, ... But you're not the one who will be using it (mainly ISPs will, and again, it's not ONE ISP), you're not the one who will finance it, you're not the one who will implement it, you're not the one who will maintain it, administer it, ... And you will probably not have any decision role in its administration.
Basically, in Teo's document, the fiber infrastructure will be owned by the government (on which LIX is based), and the LIX datacenter will be owned most probably by the ISPs.
And when i say "you" i don't mean specifically YOU, just mean anyone in here (just to avoid misunderstandings).
J4D
that's true :) , so we get the ultimate domain name now , and when the implementation phase starts we transfer it to them , easy :) we don't need to mix people up . just lets not turn this thing into an debate :) no offense
battikh
^^ not turning it into a debate, you asked a question, i answered...
but anyways, if LIX will one day see the light, and if it will become what it is supposed to be, if the website have to be official, it is supposed to be on the .lb domain, so there's really no need to spend a week searching for a super duper .com/.net/.org/... domain now, specially that what's relevant and straightforward is already taken. So just take ANY domain now if you have anything planned to start working with instead of spending so much time on something as in-important as the domain name.
J4D
la3younak battikh :) , i suggest without further waste of time to go with lebix.org ?! okay ? shall the experts start building ?
rolf
do something non-geek friendly. Like the change thing, i mean lebix sounds pretty geeky.
Also, for any lb domain youll need paperwork for company registration (.com.lb) organisation registration (.org.lb) or ISP license stuff (.net.lb)
J4D
lebix sounds geeky because you know what each letter stands for while the public will know it as lebix without interpreting what it stands for :) , and i suggest we stay technical we need to be viewed as experts who know what they are doing , not like broadband Lebanon with flashy titles and slogans who did nothing ! and now useless !

Why don't you start by creating a wiki or something collaborative, see where it leads you from there... No need to spend money now, save it for later.
There are many free collaborative wikis online that you can create... start from there, if you succeed in building momentum then you go buy the domain etc... Remember, l'habit ne fait pas le moine (its not the clothes that makes the person, translating a french poem) meaning in this case that its not the name of the website that will do the trick, but the content and the impact you can do by marketing it well.

crazy , we have been discussing the issue on lebgeeks for too long , its high time the public knew about this :)

I'll just sit by and wait, and will spring into action when I get FTP login/pass. I already have the logo obviously, so it's a skip and a jump to having an operational site! :)
pikatore
once it's up, i'll then post a link here for people to register on it... then, under advisement, i will grant author priveledges to certain users.
pikatore
and regarding domains, why not get a few of them? they're not that expensive. and if opinion changes heavily, it's obviously a piece of cake to switch the primary domain
battikh
I agree with crazy...
And enno why to put so much effort and time on something not critical while there are many much more important things to do 1st.
Plus, even if it has to be done NOW, have you agreed on the purpose of the website? Its content? ... If not, then start with this 1st, there's no point in bothering to get a domain if the purpose and the content of the website have not been decided, coz as long as this is not done, having a cool domain name or not, no website will see the light (or at least, no useful one).

Well, in my inital post, from my position, I saw three objectives (more can be added):
1) The specifics, in simple terms, of the reality of Lebanon's internet situation.
2) A good comparison between Lebanon and other countries with the internet (it will become pretty obvious how dire the situation is here)
3) What the government's public stance has been on it, and what it has been actually doing about it (Ogero's monopolistic position should be a huge key point here), and how it is actually destructive for Lebanon's future.
So at the very least, the site's useful as a factual, solid analysis of the situation, and a call to action.
Including a blog with a few authors gives the site room for expansion into serving other purposes, as well as developing a readership, as the best way to spread awareness is via active contributions.
The LIX plan can be advocated by the site, of course, but it doesn't have to be made the central theme (at first, anyway). This is how I understand things to be so far, somebody correct me please if I have things off.

jadberro wrotecrazy , we have been discussing the issue on lebgeeks for too long , its high time the public knew about this :)
Jad, discussing here on the forum is just the jumpstart, but you don't go from crawling to running without walking first.
The forum was the crawling part, walking would be the wiki part where all the ideas will be categorized, clear, justified, to get somewhere having a complete project/business plan/etc.
The .org website will be the acting/running phase of the plan. Introducing it to the public, to the government etc..
Don't take me wrong, its not that I'm in france now that I don't want to participate in it. For the time being I have only spare time to guide the project a bit, like a management style ;) if you want. But rushing into it now, won't give you the momentum you need to go public and have a solid business plan later. And by later can mean monthes if not years.
My proposition, start this wiki, see what kind of persons you need to make this project work: engineers, economist, lawyers, others that does not come to mind now..
The paper of teo is just a scratch, we should develop it with the help of different types of people.
