I have a question regarding the BIS service over here in Lebanon. Which of the BIS service provided by the carrier is better, in terms of speed, limit, and price.
Thanks.
battikh
both alfa and mtc are edge, so speed should be the same.
for alfa i got edge a bit everywhere, in beirut (hamra, ashrafieh, gemayzeh, dt, bliss, verdun, raoucheh, ...), some places are only gprs, but usually its edge a bit everywhere. in jbeil, batroun and triply had edge too (dont know if everywhere, but whenever i checked), zgharta was a bit 50/50 between gprs and edge.
that's for alfa, for mtc, no idea.
one my friends who is on mtc told me though that sometimes bbm for example hangs a bit (messages take time to be delivered). personally haven't faced any problems with alfa until now.
alfa has 500MB limit while mtc has only 100MB

I've had the MTC BIS before, I had edge 95% of the times. But the limit isn't enough! They need to add more plans/increase the limit. Thinking about changing my line

lebanese are considered cows , and companies milk us all year long ! 100 MB (inno bekhidon bil 2attara ? )
Xsever
Tatra Tatra 7alib ba2ar safi, Tatra Tatra se77a w 3awefi !
That's probably how they see it ! :D

Is it possible to activate it via gprs, entering the apn, username and password? because I am hearing rumors about it running for $5 for prepaid lines, using this method. Not sure.
J4D
that would be interesting......
any idea how ?
battikh
blackberry supports using gprs without the blackberry service. but if the provider is not stupid, they should be blocking access to the blackberry servers from the particular APN. if they don't then you have full access through gprs. if they do block it, you can still use it as on any other phone (browsing, msn, ... but without the blackerry services like bbm and push email)
as for 100MB being too little, yeah it is. but if you have wifi at home and work, should be enough...
EddieEC
100 MB isn't a problem with mtc really, since for every MB extra they only charge $0.1. And I never exceeded 100 MB, yet.
As for the gprs method, my friend's friend is using it, and it's working fine, confirming that the carriers are stupid.
J4D
it would be gr8 if you could ask how and post a tutorial (if that's not a problem ) :D
EddieEC
Tutorial? It's easy to run gprs, but I need to confirm first, once I get my blackberry.
if you are mtc, the APN is gprs.mtctouch.com.lb, leave username and password empty.
As for alfa, I think it's gprs.alfa.com.lb, and username and password empty.
Just need confirmation if this works.

Theoretically it should work, however the problem lies in the apps themselves. Google Talk for example, checks for the presence of BIS before connecting. Same goes for the Facebook app.
EddieEC
Theorically it will work? Alfa and MTC use the same technology for BIS, so it might be it. Yet again, if I use my method would blackberry messenger for example, work?

MTC : internet.mtctouch.com.lb blank/blank
Alfa: internet.mic1.com.lb mic1/mic1

thats what i meant :D i know setting gprs is easy but how to connect to BBm for example etc.....
J4D
thanks kareem :)

I am pretty sure the gprs APN is gprs.mtctouch.com.lb. I am using it as we speak.

I am using the internet.mtctouch.com.lb.... the gprs one is old. Actually recent phones detect the settings automatically, and when they do, they retrieve the settings as mentioned in my previous post.
EddieEC
Good to know, thanks for clarifying.

there's nothing to configure to make it work. once you're connected to a network (wifi, gprs, blackberry, ...) your phone will try to contact RIM's servers. If they are accessible, your phone will register on the blackberry network and everything will work (BBM, email, ...). If the RIM servers are not accessible, then only apps that don't require to be registered on the blackberry network will work.
