  • [PS3] CoD MW2 :: Online-gaming problem

So I've received a PS3 yesterday and I'm trying to play Modern Warfare 2 online but it is stuck at "Connecting to Matchmaking Server".

I can play FIFA 2010 online without a problem and I've been messing around with the MTU, DMZ and UPnP on router and all these fancy stuff but I still can't play MW2, It's not even getting past that screen which is very frustrating.

I checked my PS3 settings and tested internet connection (I am on wired Ethernet), everything is okay but in the bottom it says "Your router may not support IP-fragments and communication features of some games may be restricted".

NAT Type is 2 - which is supposed to be the optimal one.

I am on Ogero 512K DSL with the D-LINK 264DU.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try running it with absolutely no one else using the internet and log into PSN BEFORE you launch the game. What I've realized is that whenever I try to play an online game, the game automatically logs into your PSN so you have your PSN and game server loading at the same time. So log into your PSN first, finish that, then launch the game and log into the game's online mode. If you're NAT 2 then there shouldn't be any problem other than what I just said.
I did that, many... many times.

Now GTA IV is working like a charm, just did some online gaming on it, but still the stupid MW 2 :(

Is this your first time getting this error or is this the first day you get it on the game? Maybe the server is down? And don't forget that you're talking about MW2 here. This game is going to be the biggest thing this month. Are you sure the servers aren't full?
The servers are up and working as far as i know. It did the same yesterday and I never got to get past that screen.

I'm hoping someone who has the game can shed a light on the matter, it would be more accurate i suppose.

My friend has it on his PS3. He's never been able to log on. He plays other games online like you but never MW2. It has to be the servers. There are just too many fricken people playing.
NAT type 2 is perfect for your gaming. As Tako suggested, you may be trying to connect in a time where the servers are congested. When you first connect to the servers, your PSN ID is registered as a player for the first time and all the info have to be registered automatically. So if the servers are packed, it could take a while for you.

This is what I would do:

Try connecting during off peak hours. This means sometime after 12 midnight or early in the morning.

If that won't work or is hard for you to do, keep resetting your router. Doing so would grant you a new IP each time and MAYBE a better connection to Europe (where the servers are most probably located). This could help you out. I'm saying this because I know a friend (in the UAE) who tried multiple times to sign in and keeps on getting stuck at the "Connecting to matchmaking server" screen. I used my connection and logged in using his PSN ID. It took shee 10 minutes but eventually it worked out. And now he's playing online with no problems.

Try these stuff and good luck with them.....
Do you mean it could take up to 10minutes stuck on that screen for the first time ?

:O

Wow, something is wrong... but I'll give it a try later on tonight and will let you know.

Cheers!

Yeah. I've read in other forums that it took sometimes 20 minutes for some people to work.
Bass akeed, don't wait that long. Try the reset the router method first and see what happens. If that doesn't work, if you have trusted friend on another ISP, have him use your PSN ID to log in an try to play an online match.
Oh and btw, what's your PSN ID?
I want to add you if you don't mind......
I don't think I'll be playing anything online beside CoD on my PS3.

I've just started the count on my connecting to matchmaking screen. If it succeeds anytime this century I will let you know the PSN.
30 minutes and still on the screen, this is really lame...

I'll start looking into it again once I finish the single player and hopefully it will be at a very far date since GTA IV takes the lead on the priority list.
4 days later
I have the same problem dude
for 3 days in a row.

yesterday i kept it for 1 hour with no luck..

I have Nat type 2. My ps3 is european, MW2 is US. Today im gonna try with a region 2 MW2. maybe it will work.

PSN id: chikobiko
Nothing worked must be my connection then ...

I guess i need to update to a 1mb connection !
One last possible fix I can think of is to delete the update files from the Game Utility Menu and then re-update the game. It happened to me a while back and I tried this and it worked.
hi man,
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. and I've tried any possible solution to this problem and nothing worked until I went to ogero and changed my D-LINK router to the new one thomson( they have a new one right now).
since then everything is running very smooth and I can connect easily to MW2 online game.

so go ahead and switch it with the new router, and don't forget to thank me when u long on to online MW2.

and by the way, when u start playing online (MW2) YOU WILL BE VERY FRUSTRATED because MW2 is very challenging until you reach level 30 + or - then you will know to know the maps and how you play well.

so good luck.
Good, cuz i have the D-LINK one.

What did you tell them when you wanted to change it ? How long did they take to change it ? Did you pay anything ?

Details if possible :)

Oh and, is it laggy or playable ?

P.S: What is your thomson router model ? Because i just called this shit Ogero and said they don't exchange DLINK for a THOMSON, i'm thinking i'll go and buy one to get done with this crap.
Hi,

I suspect the DLink is playing a huge part in your problem. I would suggest to take it out of the equation and connect your PS3 directly to the Ogero modem. If the game works then, then we are sure there is nothing wrong with your DSL connection but the DLink is acting up. I have had similar problems with my wireless DLink and I ended up resetting it to factory defaults to get things going properly.

Also if you already have a static IP for your PS3 and have that IP in the DMZ and still no luck, then there must be some ports that are still closed. A friend of mine had to call Ogero up and tell them I am having problems with gaming and they opened the ports for him remotely (or put him on a different firewall setting). All his problems went away.

A note on the region stuff. It does not matter if you have a UK or US, PS3 or game. The games on the PS3 are region free, bluerays are not. I am playing on my US PS3 with a copy of MW2 I bought from Lebanon. I have Ogero 512k and a linksys wireless router(static IP, DMZ, UPnP on).

As for upgrading to 1mb, I don't think the problem is there, my friend has 1mb Cyberia and I still get a better ping that he does.

Hope this helps.

edit: spelling
Well the Dlink is both the modem and the router at the same time so I can't really take it out.

I will try messing (again) with the router settings over the coming days when I get time on my hands. Btw, if i do a factory reset and upgrade firmware, can i load the currently saved configurations ? There are some stuff like ACS password that I don't know how to get if it's lost. Does Ogero give you details over the phone ?

I certainly do not want to go to their offices.
I finally got it to work WITHOUT changing modem.

Here is what you need to do, and note please, do not hold me responsible for anything if it doesn't work for you. Use at your own risk, I am just sharing how my problem was solved but it doesn't mean you won't be running into risks.

Before we get going, make sure you download the DLINK firmware from here.

Now that you have done so, follow the steps below:
1- Get your OGERO and your DLINK usernames and passwords from Kareem's thread
2- Log into your DLINK as admin, go and save the configuration file in case you need to backup later.
3- Reset modem to factory settings.
4- Log back into your modem and update firmware with the one i have provided from DLINK website (note: your modem admin username is 'admin' and the password is also 'admin' now)
5- Go to Advanced Setup and add a WAN with the following main characteristics:
# PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
# LLC/SNAPBRIDGING
# Enabled NAT
# Disable Firewall
Save, reboot.
6- Go to Advanced Setup ---> LAN and turn UPnP off
7- Go to Advanced Setup ---> NAT ---> DMZ host and put in an IP for your PS3 but make sure it is in the same range as the router's IP. You can put 192.168.1.40 for example.
Save, reboot.

You are done with your DLINK.

Go to PS3, make sure you give it a manual IP adress and fill the information like this
IP Address : whatever address you gave it in DMZ 192.168.1.40 for example
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Router: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 77.42.130.32
Secondary DNS: 205.177.180.3

MTU automatic, UPnP disabled.

You're done, now you can log in to MW2 in less than 30 seconds and play with 3 bars green out of 4.

Share this with anyone that needs the help and save yourself the frustration it gave me.

Cheers!
