Wi-Fi devices will soon be able to connect in a new way that makes it more simple and convenient than ever to do things like print, share and display. The Wi-Fi Alliance is nearing completion of a new specification to enable Wi-Fi devices to connect to one another without joining a traditional home, office, or hotspot network. The Wi-Fi Alliance expects to begin certification for this new specification in mid-2010, and products which achieve the certification will be designated Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct. http://www.wi-fi.org/news_articles.php?f=media_news&news_id=909
This is really exciting :)
Interesting. But if the security gets broken, someone may have access to all of your resources. The " hackers" will put some additional efforts trying to break the WPA2 security. Then we will see a new type of encryption compatible with newer devices.. and so on..
I guess there will be a button you can click to disable this functionality :) turn it on whenever you want. And hey, you can use ad-hoc now for it.
well what they have rebranded is the concept of mesh networking.
the idea is to be able to create various "clouds" of connections facilitating interconnectivity in different cross directions instead of the common hierarchial method.

such solutions are badly needed in places such as africa where there are no propper backbone networks.
