Let me tell you. Lets suppose, a small satellite ISP starts with 5MHz on a transponder (on QSPK, this is apprx 4.5Mbit speed). 1MHz costs the provider at least $1500 (if you can find me cheaper, I will buy from you). Unlimited 1Mbit is to be sold for $50 per month, an amazing price.

So, the ISP starts an advertising campaign. There are no shapers. The first 50 people that come will experience AMAAAAAAAAAZING SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEDS.

There won't be almost any noticeable "peak time" as the users are only 50. These 50 will brag to their friends and more and more people start to come. In order for the
sat ISP to make profit, it needs 50-60 people per 1Mbit. Meanwhile the advertising "machine" keeps working on "full steam" fishing more and more people.

These people will wait 2-3 months until they understand that things are going worse and it is not a temporary situation, but a permanent one. Until these 2-3 months
the ISP will make a good profit.

This is how EuropeOnline used to work... Planetsky, BizzarNet and all other...

Go to the ISP satellites list, read the archives, see how many bucks costs a MHz on a sat transponder and then talk.

heh. to be honest, no i dont really know all those technical stuff about Satellites. i admit it :P
all im saying is what i read. u get guaranteed 80% of ur connection speed minimum, untill u go beyond the other users, u will be placed on a reduced bandwidth to allow at least 80% of the users to have their bandwidth supplied.
im not talking bullshit, it's the offers i got from downlinks providers :S
As a matter of fact, if i get a 1Mbps and it's reduced to 25% it's still an unlimited 256 kbps, so still good !

yeah satellite are usually not a viable solution, but have you seen satellite prices in the US? It's like it's another world...

can you please list some good sat downlink providers. and is it possible to combine the speed of the sat and my regular internet download speed simultaniously?

The short answer is: no.
But technically, you can distribute your connections over the 2 links, but it's not an easy thing to do and doesnt work perfectly, so you wont have exactly the bandwidth of your 2 combined connections, that is if you succeed in setting up the whole thing. There is no easy way to set it up that I know.

Padre - in short words - satellite capacity more expensive even than broadband in lebanon. They or have more strict fair usage or they are just beginners. Me&TG spent a lot of time in this area, more than that we was working in satellite business for some time, and exactly for end-users. I am still tracking this thing, so i can tell, almost nothing is changed in pricing.
So if someone want, he can test on some real user this connection, but it must be not "reseller" demo, which will show u sweet, then sell shit. Otherwise you will invest your money in equipment and then throw away after few month of headache.

Dark_angel - i remove limitation for now, for more detailed review. For now number of users who abuse is not too high, i will review it manually. Seems customers, who just download too much will not be touched, till number of them is acceptable. And i will block accounts immediately for people who share end-users accounts for networks + abuse by traffic. Maybe it will be some Fair Use system if someone load his bandwidth too much at peak hours.

i guess the fair use policy applied by tiscaly is good:

"During peak hours, customers affected by the fair usage policy will share bandwidth with each other and will be separated from other customers. The amount of bandwidth available for affected customers to share, will be at least as much as for those customers unaffected by the policy. The speed affected customers experience when downloading at peak hours will therefore depend on what these customers are doing. If they are all web-browsing and reading emails, they will experience normal broadband speed. If on the other hand they are using Peer to Peer or file sharing software they will experience slow broadband speed. Outside of peak hours, no restrictions will apply. "

I have experienced some Gateway erros or timed out when trying to download a file using my download manager.

Was it because you were messing with the servers to implement such configurations ! :)

nuclearcat, can you give us an update on how you will implement the fair use policy, what is the best time interval to download a large amount of files?

And have you seen other ISP to do that??? Since you said "All ISP breath the same air", we will play on your words. Whatever they do - the same we do. Either do take your words back in public, or expect the same level of "customer --> provider" level of contact.

This thread main objective was to know how the fair use policy will work ( fixed limitation/dynamic limitation/etc...).

Dark_angel - i remove limit. I am just reviewing accounts, if it is shared or etc and abuse - i will stop it. If it is normal user, just heavy - i will let geek download how much he wants.
By the way, if possible try to download at night, there is plenty free bandwidth for that.

ok man, I will try to run my downloads at night. I guess it is the best solution to avoid limitation.

what is the best time frame to make our downloads?

put schedule from 2am till 7am, it is always free bandwidth. Possible when i will finish other things - i will make double speed for some customers at night.
