  • Self-Quarantine: How are you managing in Lebanon?

duke-of-bytes wroteStay home
Stay home will not will be totally applicable here. Remember we are a 30 years robbed country from warlords authority .. I will not repeat the long story we all know.

Before Corona:
40 % Loss of the LBP Purchasing Power
Inflation
Capital Control
Private Secotor many lay offs / salaries cut by half ...
Poverty Increased

In Corona:
No backup plans to help people bear staying at home without any financial support , increasing more the financial stress they are already in.

Private Sectors & Free Professions took the final K.O.

After Corona:
..... Walking Dead Syndrome.
I think 20% of the population being infected is a low number---an official in Spain said that 80% of the population of Madrid] stands to be infected. Considering Beirut and the surrounding areas is close to 2 million people, that might inflate to 1,5 million people, just in and around Beirut. I realize this is a worst case scenario without a reliable cure or vaccine anytime soon, but still pretty sobering.

Stay home, stay away from people and wash your hands. Not much else to do.

Although I do not endorse the current government nor ministry, I think they are doing their best (knowing that they won't call '7alit tawari2' for political reasons)
The health minister is being as professional as ever, and is trying to make things work although his political allies are not giving him full consensus.

It's very sad seeing actual potential to do something within a pandemic being thrown to waste...

Nevertheless, regarding this thread, I'm spending my time learning new stuff in the programming industry, freelancing and learning German :)
I know this is a quarantine thread but anyone has any idea if western union agents are open? I need to send someone abroad money to prevent a service from shutting down, seen the current banks problem
also feel free to ask me any questions, I'm in the medical field, i'll try my best to help.

Yes they are, but most of them till 2PM tough.

Are you optimistic about the hydroxychloroquine resolution?
I kind of am (out of despair).

Ignore what President Trump and Elon Musk said and wait until you hear real research that is being done. And sometimes, the cure can be worse than the disease. There are other drugs being tested, until then, we just have to be patient and not rush to buy something which puts other people who actually NEED the drug at risk.

I'm not following to purchase the cure in case I'm not infected; I'm just wondering whether what he said is possible. Clinical trials start on the 24th of March, assuming it takes 3-5 days to cure a patient with the treatment given, the official answer should come out quite soon.
Being just bummed out as I've started self-isolation a week before MTV even announced it. (A relative has potential heart disease)
I got approved for a summer internship in Germany and worried they wouldn't be managing to open the airports anytime soon...

Yes, I'm afraid this will have to be a winter internship.

I also think so.

About the hydroxychloroquine, I read that this drug do wonders in vitro but not in vivo, how it works is still not clear hence not optimally used.
Would it be used for covid19?
I think not, i think that another treatment protocol/vaccine will soon emerge, i could be wrong though.

To make it short, ACE2 receptors are mainly expressed by type II and type I lungs alveolar epithelial cells. Corona virus has spike protein or S-Protein that binds to ACE2 alvelor epithelial cells to make them as a host to release its RNA. The cell it self becomes a factory of several virus copies. Hydroxychloroquine blocks that binding process to a certain extent.

What is worth mentioning that SARS 2003 spread , has S-Protein spikes but were not efficient enough to bind to the ACE2 receptors; thus the low infection rate. Corona mutated it self and makes its spikes more efficient to bind , thus the high infection rate we are seeing now ( 1 to 3).

Hey man thanks for the info, made me dig a little bit more.
The virus does indeed work like you said, but not the drug at least to my knowledge, some sources also claim that ARBs actually worsen the prognosis, so it's not merely the virus binding to the receptor that counts.
What would be more interesting, and which is being studied at present time, is the antibody response to this virus which could lead to vaccine development or some ind of passive immunity treatment, and that's what I'm hoping for.
i just want to state that remdesivir is the closest could be to approval as a treatment for covid-19.
Both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-1 are inhibited by remdesivir in multiple in vitro systems, activity against SARS-CoV-2 infectivity in
vitro is also documented , the drug is being tested in multiple randomized studies , largest being in china (phase 3).
Tried to get some cash from Moneygram from LibanPost today, all closed. Any ideas whether there is still any MoneyGram/CU agents that open?

Wrong thread ?
Kareem wrote Wrong thread ?
I'm assuming (and certain) that they're closed due to the quarantine, how can I manage to find one open?
(to put into perspective with the thread title)
I want to go jog after the curfew... does anyone know what kind of trouble I can get into?
