  • LebGeeks Forum Ideas

I have been a proactive member for 6 consecutive years in this Lebanese technology forum which I found it very fruitful , informative , and a hub for technology enthusiasts coming from different backgrounds ( Hardware , Software , Networking , Tetelcom etc..). Here are some ideas:

~ Let us do lunch meetings from time to time for face to face introductions and sharing of insights in a direct way ( empowering more links)

~I think the forum needs a shuffle in its GUI , which adds a refresh and new look.

~I think the forum needs a job sharing sections , for opportunities sharing

~I think the forum needs a word of mouth spread on social media platforms , may a mobile app. too is a good idea

Thank You
The GUI is minimal and functional, IMO it’s perfect for its purpose.

LinkedIn and other professional job searching sites are more suitable for such purposes.

Geeks would spearfish and find communities like this. It’s not the type of community that should be actively advertised for everyone.

I respect your justifications , but I am giving my opnion. People have different prespectives on articulating things.
I've also been a long time member here (since 2011), although I'm not that active anymore, I still visit the site everyday.

- I remember when there was a meetup every year (which I couldn't manage to make it every time), where everyone would gather in a coffee shop, or someplace like that. I would encourage planning a meeting someday, preferably in Summer.

- Back in the day, the UI looked very different, it had a light orange-ish theme, with a cartoon nerd face above the logo. As I remember correctly, it was changed to look more simplified and modern in style.

- I agree with mmk92, Lebgeeks shouldn't be a place to search for jobs.

- A mobile app would be nice if the forum had more features, but with the current setup I don't think a mobile app would be that beneficial. As for Social Media awareness, linking Lebgeeks with facebook or twitter would be a bad idea, it would attract a huge buttload of users (with them a lot of inactive users), not to mention expanding the moderation work.

While it is true that you are sharing opinions, in my opinion (hehe) it would be nice if you could back up yours with arguments. I am not at all disagreeing with you, it's just that it annoys me when people read other's opinions and acknowledge that they respect those opinions without offering a counter to theirs or a proof of your own.

And just so that I don't look like a complete #$%^ with this post, I will defend a point of yours being that increasing exposure is not completely redundant. I do agree that some geeks would spearfish for this site, but many do not. Also, exposure would be great for encouraging new people to become geeks by even passing the minimum requirements for signing up for this site.

As to how, I cannot see any method working; creating Facebook page would be a massive detriment to the site, maybe even shifting traffic off of here to there, or we could see a massive transformation of the page to the Sell your Stuff thread, which would make us a bland generic site like every other one out there. I am also certainly not suggesting payed ads, since this website does not even have any ads (massive thanks the Samer and the mods), I do not even know how they manage the upkeep. So my final conclusion would be word of mouth between us geeks. I do this as much as possible and I have managed to add a couple of members on here (that may not be that active) and have had people thanking me for referring them to threads about the state of the internet in Lebanon, or shipping from abroad and even some networking issues.

I'd love to see some new arguments brought up and correctly argued. And please feel free to provide a counterargument to this or point out fallacies in my argument.
Not a mobile app (please) but a some responsiveness. It's mostly CSS stuff.
I can put in some effort for this cause, let me know!

My reasons are that a mobile app takes some work, and should be maintained. I don't see who is going to put in that work, and the benefit of an app vs tweaking the site to be responsive.

I suggested increasing exposure in the past, the idea didn't seem to get much "traction".

I would like to see more happening on lebgeeks. I believe that there are people out there to be reached who could make it more interesting.
However, some non-tech users might take advantage of Lebgeeks for "free IT advice". It would have to be a targeted effort.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Although we tend to shy away from feedback topics (see rule #4), I would be up for experimenting leaving this thread open for a few more days to gather more thoughts from the community.
Im totally with having meetups from time to time, having discussions and sharing ideas etc..(we can make a telegram group for the meetups)

And yes Im with the idea of Lebgeeks having more exposure to the public and attracting new active members. I love this forum and I have been here since 2009 and I really miss the old days where the forum was buzzing with posts and discussions. We need this back!

I also made a few friends around here.
The meetups have been discussed from time to time and I'm always interested in them but can't workout the time because I'm not here or I'm busy (it's a 1.5hr drive for me).

As for everything else:
Don't you dare suggest a change in UI. Low data usage is exactly what's needed in Lebanon and this site loads up hell-a fast when my DSL drops to 500kbps, lol.

Mobile app, I would not download a dedicated lebgeeks forum mobile app.

Opening to new users is a hit and miss. We already are becoming less geek as I see it, this could make it worse.

Telegram group, hell-a no, if anything it's invite only to Wickr or Signal. Don't want my personal info for all to see.
I said it before and I say it every time something like this comes up. Please get rid of the registration question! Its turning away plenty of people who would've signed up and became active but couldn't. Not all geeks know programming as there are several types of geeks

yea exactly, i know lot of people who are geeks in biology chemistry cars engines space etc etc...
but cant put together a simple if statement or solve a mathematical equation

anyway you can argue that geeks will search to know the answer, but hey if someone hates maths he hates maths he won't bother no one with great knowledge will bother with the registration process unless he needs to ask something, but for sharing his knowledge he/she really won't other.
the question should be generalized or include different topics not just Math and CS. and btw i am one of the people who is a geek in almost anything and knowledgeable in almost any scientific topic except math (which i hate really bad). programming i forgot it all and now i cant solve the question whatever it is.
