  • how do you manage your family's internet quota

Buy a linksys from EKT. Usually costs 40$ then install DDWRT on it and you will have a very powerful router with a lot of functionalities. Or install pfSense on an old pc or laptop and use it as a firewall for the whole home connection.
a month later

Mikrotik RouterOS is a great tool for computer networking lovers.
Please do. I tried a mikrotik router connected to the Thompson dsl modem/ router... I disabled wifi from Rhompson and let all users connect thrh mikrotik..
It works well as long as no one is downloading a large file or streaming video. Once any of that happens, the Thompson modem/router will disconnect from broadband and you would have to reset it. Sometimes I would have to reset the mikrotik as well.
Any known settings that should be made?

Which linksys was it that supports ddwrt for $40?
With which DSL modem is it compatible?(i mean among the common ones around- thompson? )
Thanks

tell me your desired scenario and i will help you. ex: i want to make two groups, VIP group and low priority group. or i want throttle the speed of this device or that device.

the following is my scenario to inspire:

i have 2 groups, "VIP" and "others", VIP group is me and my family, a minimum speed of 1500 kbps is guaranteed for us. the others, guests and friends share the remaining bandwidth. of course my phone and laptop have priority inside the VIP group.

Thanks a lot for the offer to help.
Your scenario is good enough for a start; I can add another group later.. But how does defining groups help in preventing the Thompson ADSL modem from disconnecting? I am thinking perhaps there are settings related to speed or buffer size at the mikrotik side in order to match the modem. Could it be?

No.
Say someone is watching youtube on a pc that is wifi connected to mikrotik, or may be downloading a large file. The mikrotik is connected to Thompson adsl modem via cable. The Thompson wifi is disabled. Nothing else is connected to it other than mikrotik. In a few minutes of this traffic, the adsl drops the internet connection (the LAN is still ok) and one will have to turn off the Thompson switch and back on.

So after a little search i found a great program that allow me to control bandwidth and set max down/up speed for every person connected on wifi, it's called selfishnet
