  • How to use Thomson 585v6 as a wifi repeater?

So I have an old Thomson 585v6 modem adsl that I am not using anymore for a good time (replaced with tplink), though now I would need an extra wifi range extender for the mountain, do you know if I can use it as a wifi repeater?
I tried to play with WDS settings but I am not a pro

i don’t know exactly how does the firmware look like but when you enable the WDS you should enter the root router BSSID or MAC ADDRESS and the wireless wds key (if its required) then it will work...finally..don’t forget to configure ssid and wireless password..

If using WDS it will be limited to WEP?

old routers are limited to WEP, yess
it can be also limited to 802.11g... but if it's important to establish it is worth it until you get a new access point...

Btw any wifi router is capable of ''extending'' the network internet of another router?
I am using a tplink WR841n for that purpose in the Beirut's house, but if I get an ilink or Dlink wifi router they will act the same?

yep any router can connect to any router via WDS if it's WDS enabled

Do you have a particular preferred brand for wider wifi range? I tried the Connect wifi router at my summer house and it was very limited, it definitely need an additional wifi router to cover the house, I think I have a neighbor who is still using an old long range wireless telephone from war's period and it's scrambling the wifi network!

tplink routers have a very good range (2.4ghz and 5ghz) at lower prices than other brands...concerning the issue with your neighbour's antenna i suggest you get a 5ghz enabled router (archer c5 or archer c7 from tplink) to avoid interference if you cannot convince him to remove it.. i don't know what are their exact prices but i think the C5 (300mbps 2.4ghz and 866mbps 5ghz) is around 70-80$ and the C7 (450mbps 2.4ghz and 1299mbps 5ghz) is around 100$
first try to change your wireless channels... if this doesn't work... then get one of these routers

I hope it's easy to do it on Connect modem interface
The Tplink wifi repeater are as good as wifi routers or they are still limited to wep? And what about their range?

Edit: I have found Xiaomi Youth router which is supposed to be 2.4/5ghz at Ishtari!
So if the main modem/router is 2.4, I can still use the 5ghz channels with the Xiaomi to devices?

if the original router has a wep encryption on wifi then you're obliged to use wep on repeater...

you can connect the xiaomi router via wds on 2.4ghz to your root router and then use its 5ghz no prob... but i don't know why you insist on bridges..

This xiaomi will blow my neighbor's 80s cordless system out of the water ;)
What do you mean ''bridges''? the fact that I connect 2 wifi routers for wider cover?
Well I tried to use one router only in my Beirut's house (tplink ADSL modem/router) and it wasn't enough because of the many thick walls, I ended up installing a bridge with a tplink wifi router to extend the coverage fully, it's not perfect in stormy days as the electricity cuts every 5mins and I have to align both routers, but instead of paying a super powerful adsl 200$ modem I paid a total of 100$ for both because they are enough.
If it was a Wise box we were talking about then yes I would have get a more powerful wifi router because the wise box has no wifi at all, the Connect one has a limited coverage but it's enough to work in bridge with another wifi router and cover 80% of the house

i mean why don't you connect both routers with an ethernet cable? it's more stable and does not require any alignment or additional time for startup

The house is big, using a cable will mean to see an ugly fat cable all along a corridor
There are devices (ethernet over power, I think) where you can try to use your home's electrical system to spread your internet connection without a mess. I don't ever recall seeing them here, but then again, I haven't really been looking for them. They may be called powerline adapters. That may take care of your problem.
