Does anyone here know about Lebanon's gun laws? I'm not talking about hunting rifles or shotguns. I'm sure that most of the rifles and pistols in Lebanon are probably illegal, but does anyone know what an average citizen has to do to own a pistol legally? A rifle? An automatic rifle?
Thanks.

"There is no legal right under Lebanese law for anyone on Lebanese territory to bear arms. The government has wide latitude and discretion under the provisions of the Weapons and Ammunition Law to grant or refuse permits for the manufacturing, trading in, possession, and carrying of weapons and ammunition. However, Lebanon is notorious for the existence on its territory of several armed groups operating outside any legal framework." From the library of congress.
Worst case scenario you can ask at the "baladieh" .. i think the permit to have weapons for hunting can be done there.

I wasn't talking about hunting rifles.
Thanks for the information.

You need a permit, which is usually signed by the minister, i am not sure though.
My advise: stay away from guns, it brings trouble, you could buy a hunting rifle and put it at home, it is enough to defend your self, but otherwise carrying a pistol or a shotgun in your trunk, i find that very ugly, and eventually it'll bring you trouble knowing that you have that thing on(with) you, available to use. Not carrying any, will push you to act wisely.
Have a nice day!

No legal right to bear arms unless part of the armed forces

Okay, many thanks to the three of you for the help/advice!

Or maybe just not being hot-headed and having some self-control would make you act wisely. I always carry a knife in my pocket, had quite a few fights and I've never even used it or even threatened to use it, while you may argue a knife isn't a gun they're both self-defense weapons that in the hands of an idiot can be used to attack someone. المشكلة مش بالسلاح المشكلة بالحمار الي حامل السلاح

I agree with this man right here.

Same concept is being argued in america. Too bad not everyone is smart like you, or can control themselves. So force a rule on the 100% to protect people from the 10% who might misuse it.
hussam
Sure but how do you assess who is going to misuse it and who won't? The only criteria you have is checking for previous records.

I guess a debate has started here, so I will provide my opinion. I think people should be allowed guns because the government, being composed of humans, is fallible, untrustworthy, and potentially dangerous. The people should always have a "last resort" kind of solution which involves simple violent resistance.

indeed, this very point is stated in the US constitution, with the goal of protecting the citizens from their own government in case sh*t hits the fan.
hussam
I like to stay objective in such topics although it is easy in this case since I am personally indifferent.
1) I think the US constitution allows you to use weapons to protect yourself from a government employee who trespasses or basically anything illegal that requires you to use self defense. I can't be sure though. My information is mostly from reading random bits on the internet.
2) I'm not arguing against guns or for guns. I would rather discuss the mechanics of how regulation would work if civilians were allowed guns in Lebanon. How many people who legally acquired guns are going to abuse them? If we assume an arbitrary number of 1 in 500, is that an acceptable number? What is the acceptable amount of "accidents"? How much would guns affect the current murder rate (either increase or decrease)?
How do you decide who gets to carry a gun and who doesn't? What is a reliable method?
NuclearVision
There isn't any.
I believe no one should have access to firearms.
@ die_kapitan, you said you carry a knife, what do you intend to use it for?
in my opinion, you don't need it, let me explain why, lets say you got involved in a fight, i am pretty sure you're won't use that thing.
The other case you might need it is when you get assaulted or robbed in the street(here you might think of using your knife), but again, the thief who assumingly had planned the robbery, unless moron, should have a superior gun or the appropriate tools, so your knife is useless, and most probably will mark you as a threat, then the thief or twisted-mind assaulter will have a reason to hurt you.

Another issue is that allowing guns should really be a unanimous decision. People may feel differently about their neighbors owning guns.
Some may think "At least I have one too". Others will think "I do no want this person to have a gun and be close to me".
Perhaps they are not allowed to avoid the hassle of policing all those situations.
scorz
You can have a pistol license it's no big deal "رخصة نقل وحمل سلاح". And of course you need to have your own pistol because the license is registered under its serial number.
Now the problem is, if you go to the ministry of defense by yourself, you'll wait forever before you got any reply.
However, if you know "someone" it will be done in less than a week. But hey who need a license when you know "someone".
Anyway, I am against carrying a gun. Unless you really really need it for some reasons.

Yes. it is stupid for civilians to carry a gun for any reason except if you have a shop with precious goods; like jewelry shops and money exchanges
rolf
@MrClass : Even then, one gun vs two guns, what does it solve? It makes things more dangerous.
NuclearVision
Theft and robbery happens everywhere around the world, doesn't justify carrying a weapon, in my opinion.

Just to be clear, I don't advocate a policy whereby people are allowed to walk around KFC and Hamra street with pistols and AK47s. What I meant was that I believe people should be able to keep arms in their homes to be able to not only defend their homes against invaders, but also against the government itself.
