Hey guys,
Since the decrease in prices that Ogero has released this month, I was planning on upgrading to the 8mbs DSL, I currently have a 4Mbs with a 50GB quota, but after learning that from 12-7 there is no more free bandwidth, i wanted to upgrade to the higher package. It's as expensive as the old 4mb connection so I'm willing to pay for it.
Here's the problem, after Ogero did their initial "kashif" of my phone lines, they claimed that my building can't 'handle' speeds higher than the 4Mbs, I'm going to go ahead and call bullsh*t on that because I really don't know what the means. Can anyone explain?
My building is fairly new (built in the last 5 years), and I doubt their claims, is there any way around this?
If what they're saying is true, is there a fix?
Any explanations would be great because 4mbs with 50gb quota and no unlimited nightly bandwidth is in fact an increase in prices, considering im paying for the additional download charges (2,000 L.L per 1 GB).
Much appreciated! ^^

Precisely how much benefit you see from ADSL will greatly depend on how far you are from the central office of the company providing the ADSL service. ADSL is a distance-sensitive technology: As the connection's length increases, the signal quality decreases and the connection speed goes down. The limit for ADSL service is 18,000 feet (5,460 meters), though for speed and quality of service reasons many ADSL providers place a lower limit on the distances for the service. At the extremes of the distance limits, ADSL customers may see speeds far below the promised maximums, while customers nearer the central office have faster connections and may see extremely high speeds in the future. ADSL technology can provide maximum downstream (Internet to customer) speeds of up to 8 megabits per second (Mbps) at a distance of about 6,000 feet (1,820 meters), and upstream speeds of up to 640 kilobits per second (Kbps). In practice, the best speeds widely offered today are 1.5 Mbps downstream, with upstream speeds varying between 64 and 640 Kbps. Some vast improvements to ADSL are available in some areas through services called ASDL2 and ASDL2+. ASDL2 increases downstream to 12 Mbps and upstream to 1 Mbps, and ASDL2+ is even better -- it improves downstream to as much as 24 Mbps and upstream to 3 Mbps.

Thanks for that.
Ogero really shouldn't say "ur phone lines cant handle it", it's quite misleading.

We understand the distance issue however how can they advertise an 8mb speed if the majority of users can't even get it?
I'm on the same boat as dio and I have yet to learn of anyone lucky enough to have the 8mb speed.

This is exactly my point, they reduce the prices, increase the bandwidth, and remove 12-7 PM unlimited downloads and pretend like they're doing us a favor. Little do the majority of the people know that when it comes down to it, you'll be paying slightly more than you were before because of the lack of free nightly quota and the charging if you go over your limit.
And their excuses are they have cheaper 6mb and 8mb connections, yet no one can f*cking use them cuz our "phone lines cant handle it" and we have to be practically living INSIDE THE CENTRAL of Ogero to use them.
I live in the HEART OF BEIRUT, specifically, HAMRA, and if you can't get an 6/8 MB connection in HAMRA then this country's infrastructure is a lot worse than I thought it was.
Honestly, I was happy with my 4MBs co. up until this whole "upgrade" Ogero did at the start of the month, I was getting great consistency, good speed, low latency while gaming, and the nightly quota was on, now it's off, and now im paying (according to my calculations) about 10,000 L.L more than i was before they did this whole upgrade issue just because of the 2,000 L.L per gig extra.
And another IMPORTANT QUESTION comes up, why the F*CK do IDM, Terranet and Sodetel STILL HAVE FREE NIGHTLY QUOTA while OGERO doesn't? Aren't they all working under Ogero? Good luck asking Ogero, they will just tell you that's the new law.
I'm considering switching ASAP to another ISP that actually listens and has clear and concise explanations to the questions every has on their mind and not "eh istez, el khashif 2al inno ma feek tekhod aktar min 4 mbs".
Ridiculous.

@dio If ogero said your line can't have more than 4Mb maybe it's true but did you try to test your line by yourself ?
dio
I'm not talking about the fact that I believe them or not, they may be right, I'm just saying why advertise that 6-8mbs is cheaper now, when no one can use it? And Im asking why the removal of nightly quota when other ISPs are still offering it?

I live in aiisha bakkar which the center of beirut or so,my co is ras beirut,my down line attenuation is 23db and i have amazing line stats too and yet they told me that i can't handle more than 4mbps. ridiculous.these are my stats:
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 508 / 2.046
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,0 / 18,5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 11,0 / 25,0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 30,5 / 32,0

That definitely doesn't sound right! I mean what they are claiming, not that I don't trust you. :)
I wonder if they simply don't have enough bandwidth at the CO (or are in the process of upgrading) and they just don't admit that they are at fault for not having everything in place by now. So they blame the "phone line" ... as if the phone line is our property, and not Ogero's responsibility in the first place.
Is it possible to find out what the max speed they would give you without actually applying for it? My attenuation is ~13db, my modem says that the max bandwidth it can handle based on attenuation and SNR is 23mbps ... so Ogero cannot blame it on the "phone line"
Hamra CO, by the way.
. . . . . Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 31.3 31.3
Attenuation (dB): 12.5 3.5
Output Power (dBm): 12.3 13.5
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 23744 1317
Rate (Kbps): 2046 508

Ogero guys are a bunch of liers, your line can handle much more than 4Mbps and yea trent you are right it is not possible to know how much the line can handle before hooking you up to a port and see the your port stats, i once had a chat with an Ogero engineer i told him why you lie to people how is it possible to test lines before you install a dsl connection, he didn't know what to say except that "we can't test the line of every user , so we tell them depending on where they live" what a joke this means they look at where you live and they lie and tell you that they tested your line and it can't handle.
NuclearVision
Just a thought if one is sure that his line could actually handle the speed, couldn't he ask for the upgrade? I mean what the hell would they lose? Event the quota difference between packages will be less expensive than the additional gbs tariffs. So nothing to lose from both party, considering one is a heavy downloader, in need for much bigger bandwidth, and most importantly not trusting Ogero for the lies ; )

I think one reason why they aren't giving it out and just using the whole phone line issue is becuase they are saving the higher bandwidth for VIPs, as in, if you want 6-8mbs is through wasta.
Just a thought.

FYI,
Some folks I know do have that subscription and they do benefit from the speeds.

Here's a thought:
What would happen if I called Ogero and asked for the 8 mbs package (even thought my line "can't handle" it)?
They would say my phone cant handle it according to the kashif, but then I'd insist on upgrading it, that way Ill get more quota, and not paying the extra for it.
You think this could work?

I bet you could, but whether it's worth it or not depends on how much your line can handle right now. How much can your line handle?(according to Ogero)
dio
4 Mbs according to them. But the reason I would be insisting on 8mbs is just for the 100GB quota limit. It's cheaper than paying for 4mbs, and paying the over-the-limit charge.
True I wont be getting 8mbs, but my account will have a 100gb limit.
alainshihime
how do i find my line attenuation?

Hey all I contacted ogero again 1 week ago so they test my line again, and now surprise my line can handle the 6-8 mb. So check again maybe you get lucky
dio
Thanks, I will call them back ASAP.
Just as I suspected
