eWizzard wroteOh boy, where to start with nuclearcat's posts...
And how did you come to that conclusion, that all what addicts want is to actually kill themselves, i.e. commit suicide?
Willingly inhaling poisonous materials that will kill them slowly. All of them understand, it's bad, it will lead for sure for shorter lifespan. What else than slow suicide they are doing?
eWizzard wroteFirst of all, I don't know how you managed to condense the complex problem of substance abuse and dependence to "not enough smart". (I feel like I'm reading very best london here) What about factors beyond the person's control, such as social stigmas, support from family and friends, financial situation, availability of dedicated drug rehabilitation centers and programs, ongoing drug withdrawal symptoms, acute mental illnesses... Are all of those obstacles somehow insignificant all of a sudden?
Mental illness can be a reason, but if person is so ill that he cannot control his actions, he should be isolated from society. Other, it depends on situation, mostly not excuse for nicotine.
I tried few kinds of addictive chemicals, and none of them worked with me, including famous addictive coffeine (but this one is not considered harmful). I take only what i want, and carefully evaluate the pros and cons.
eWizzard wroteSecond, your whole statement is a naturalistic is-ought fallacy with clear implications for a
social Darwinist attitude towards the problem (and likely other social issues as well). In other words, you're being an unreasonable and inconsiderate jerk.
Wrong.
1)I object people smoking in public and affecting others.
2)Everything within their hands, and depends on their will and level of IQ, it is proven, that a lot of people quit smoking.
3)Smoking is not alcohol or heroine addition, it doesn't implicate serious health issues on withdrawal. Yes it is discomfort, but not more.
If someone call me jerk, it means i reach my goal, at least i can laugh on him, this means i pissed him off and he don't have enough arguments, and turned to personal insults :)
eWizzard wroteWhile I agree with your sentiment in the first part, to you it seems that these people are better off either dead or thrown in jail, which is both sadistic and a false dilemma, given that rehabilitation is possible and is actually much more beneficial both to them and to society.
If someone intentionally (or he is not able to control himself) cause damage for rest of society - he should be isolated. Again, if he smoke in his house and poison himself only, up to him. If he smoke in public place, and other people inhaling this shit, or this teach wrong things kids, he should be punished. Smokers are doing that always intentionally, because they understand well, they are not alone, but they put their own interests above the interests of society, so most right is a fine, then if repeats - should be short jail terms and work therapy, other drug addicts (where withdrawal can kill them) who can't control themself need help, rehab centers and etc, but it is same isolation from society.
eWizzard wroteI'm not sure where you got that "Human - wont" part since
the experiment you're talking about didn't encompass human test subjects. Regardless, assuming that that part is true, logic would have it that humans should be capable of refraining from drug abuse before reaching the point of extreme bodily harm or death. Obviously, this isn't always the case.
Sure depends on drug, i am talking about nicotine.
eWizzard wroteAgain, I'm not sure what you're suggesting here... That people who have a physical dependence can simply shake it off like it's nothing, and that failure to do so would make them inhuman?
It will make them less intelligent. The more human person is, the more his intelligence will drive his behavior and not the low-lying physical desires.
Yes, interesting read. It means matter of level of treatment.
But as you see smoking were completely legal, and look how much people are addicts?
Good thing that anybody using social media, junk food are not affecting other people.
