Allow me to tackle a sensitive subject when it comes to anime, known as fillers and commercial milking:
We all know that, in Japan, talented writers express their visions and ideals by drawing Manga or creating anime.
This concept brought forth some of the mos beautiful and creative animated features, with ideas and subjects that Hollywood wouldn't even dare tackle... They brought us to the beautiful world of Anime.
Unfortunately, Anime is also a business, and needs lots of funding and sponsoring. Which brings us to the matter of fillers.
Fillers have two reasons: Either the Anime has caught up too fast with the Manga, so filler episodes are needed to close the gap. Or, the anime is such a commercial hit that the Manga and the Anime are both largely extended. Such extension leads to the degrading of the original story of the Manga or anime. Not to mention the merchandise coupling with some "Mecha" anime, among others (I'm looking at you Neon Genesis and Saint Seiya...)
For instance, let's talk about "Death Note" and the fact that the Manga writer (Spoiler alert, skip this paragraph if you don't wanna know)........... killed "L" just for the sake of prolonging the series. I will use the words of IGN's Chris MckKenzie: "Death Note paid this guy the ultimate backhand compliment. As soon as he left the series, it fell straight off a cliff. The second that L's no longer involved in the plot, you may as well put it down and find something else to watch."
Same goes for Saint Seiya, this Anime has the most original, epic, and thought provoking plot ever to be graced on TV. It was also blessed with the most beautiful cast of characters (The Twelve Gold Saints). Unfortunately, the episodes following the original "sanctuary" arc were done as fillers. The butchering however, comes from the fact that Saint Seiya is still alive to this day, with multiple cheap and low-budget adaptions and OVAs that use cliched plots and new gay style characters. As if it wasn't enough that the series wasn't allowed to die gracefully, but they are still milking the dead corpse of Saint Seiya... End of Rant.
Long story short, I always make sure to stop watching an anime as soon as it turns commercial... And pay the utmost respect to the series that end in less than 50 episodes.
Sayonara.

@MasterBatata Oh, haven't seen the two specials, mind giving the link?

@cullinan86
That's 100% true. But I'm still extremely optimistic towards Japanese animation and mangas. I have some kind of experience in it but they still manage to surprise me every year.
