Fellow geeks, I'm going to be spending some time in bed recovering from an injury, and I was hoping you could recommend a good book to read, preferably a story. Something with twists and head scratchers. I read The Thief, wasn't good at all. I wonder if there's a modern day Lord Of The Rings kind of books. Anything at all?

read Space Odyssey... or Childhood's end. Both are Arthur C Clark, and both are some of the best science fiction books ever written...

None of them are fiction, but they'll surely pike your interest:
• Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman – Richard P. Feynman
• iWoz – Steve Wozniak
• Thinking fast and slow – Daniel Kahneman
• The Design of Everyday Things – Donald A. Norman

Inheritance Trilogy (actually 4 books) by Christopher Paolini. Eragon was a movie very loosely based on the first book.
Nemesis-301
and then there were none - by Agatha Christie
really one of the most amazing books I have read, I couldn't sleep because I wanted to know what was going to happen next, I stayed up until 3:00 A.M reading that book!
Nabs
Nemesis-301, are there any hidden doors or pathways in that book? Most of Christie's books I've read had those. You could see them coming at one point. So, does it?
AxisFlame
you could try Harry Potter, Narnia, the Halo books, The inheritance Quadrilogy, Lord of the rings series, the Hobbit (the first book in the lord of the rings, kinda like a prequel), Percy Jackson series, Hunger Games series...

Believe me read A Game of Thrones the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire saga and i guarantee you will be coming back for more .
Nabs
AxisFlame, The Hobbit was released before Lord Of The Rings :)
I've already read most of the epic novels you mentioned, my friends. I was hoping that something was freshly released in the line of those. A Game Of Thrones, haven't read yet. Old, new?

Read "Game of Thrones", it's new by "George Martin".
I guarantee it will blow your mind. Start with the first book "A song of ice and fire".
Flakk
Yes i second "A Game of Thrones" and "A Song of Ice and Fire" books. Read those and then watch the awesome series based on the books. The first season ended last year and its returning for a second one this year.

If you like LOTR, then read The Children Of Hurin - JRR Tolkien
The Children of Húrin takes the reader back to a time long before The Lord of the Rings, in an area of Middle-earth that was to be drowned before Hobbits appeared, and when the great enemy was still the fallen Vala, Morgoth, and Sauron was only Morgoth's lieutenant. This heroic romance is the tale of the Man, Húrin, who dared to defy Morgoth, and his family's tragic destiny, as it follows his son Túrin Turambar's travels through the lost world of Beleriand...
Its really an amazing story. This, and The Hobbit (JRR TOLKIEN aswell) , are the ONLY books I have ever read and finished in my entire life, literally.
Good Luck and recover soon !
Edit: I just read the question again, didnt see the "modern day" part of the phrase haha, but I still really recommend those!

IceWind Dale trilogy and Dark Elf Trilogy also some books i heard interesting.
AxisFlame
i know it was released before, its success is the reason he wrote LOTR, that is why i said "the first book in the lord of the rings, kinda like a prequel", i said KINDA LIKE A PREQUEL.
Nemesis-301

The first book is called A Game Of Thrones. And the series is called A Song Of Ice And Fire.
I'm at the third book, A Storm Of Swords. It's a brilliant serie of books and you should definitely read them.

Since you liked Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series, I think you're preferred genre of novels is fantasy/adventure, so here are a few I enjoyed:
Fantasy/Adventure
1- Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
2- A Song of Ice and Fire Series (Including: "A Game of Thrones", "A Clash of Kings", "A Storm of Swords" and "A Feast for Crows") by George R. R. Martin
3- Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel by Susanna Clarke
If you also like mystery, I recommend the following:
Mystery:
1- Tales of Mystery and Imagination, by Edgar Allen Poe (I personally loved "The Gold Bug")
2- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, by John le Carré

You want twists and head scratchers? Get Dan Brown's books. He's a symbologist.. French and English.
The Lost Symbol is about freemasonary and Illuminati (of which I'm very into) and the Davinci Code is good as well..
