  • [Windows] Did you know that ... ?

Post windows tips and tricks that you frequently use or want people know.

I'll start with a few:

CTRL + SHIFT + CLICK - Runs apps as administrator,similar to right click/run as administrator(Vista/Win7)
WINKEY + [NUM] - Invokes taskbar apps based on their order. e.g: WINKEY + 1 (Win7)
Task Manager > Right Click a Process > Set Affinity - Allows you to reduce/increase the number of core/processors an application is allowed to use. (Win7/Vista?)

Keep them coming.
A) no matter what windows version you use you cannot create a folder and name it CON

B)create a hidden folder:
1) create folder and name it: ALT+255
2) right click-->properties-->customize-->change icon--> scroll a bit to the right and there are 3 blank ones--> select one of them and voila!!

I was able to select the blank folder without naming it ALT+255. o_O
but naming it makes the name disappear.
- Win + Space --> Quick Desktop Preview (Windows 7).

- Copy a URL from your Browser --> Show Desktop --> Click Win+N !

- Open a Folder --> Press Ctrl + N to open in again in another window :)

- Control Panel --> Mouse --> Pointer Options (3rd Tab) --> Snap To (automatically move pointer to...)

- Go to Folder Options --> View (2nd Tab) --> Check "Use Checkboxes to select items".

- Win + Left/Right/Up/Down arrows --> Snap window left/right/maximize/minimize.

- Double click on the top LEFT edge of the window/app to immediately close it.

- This one is really cool!
Open multiple windows/apps/browser... Click and hold the top border of any opened window and move your mouse quickly (Up and Down or Left and Right), and all other windows will be minimized.

- Ctrl + Shift + N --> Create new folder.
Thanks, very useful indeed.

For those of you who simply want more snapping options than this, you can use this in addition to the default.
Control Freaks - Control Panel GOD Mode :P

1- Create a New Folder on your desktop
2- Rename the folder to: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Enjoy!

If you have a url in your clipboard, and while all your windows are minimized (Desktop is visible), pressing Win+N will open that url in you default browser...

You got that! ;)

- When writing a line (try it in the reply box below for example), let's say you wrote 5 words.

Pressing Ctrl + BCKSP will delete one word. (That's obvious).
But the cool thing is this:

If you press afterward Alt + BCKSP, that word (even whole sentence) will be restored :)

- Alt + Left Arrow --> Go back one step in your browser/explorer window.
- Alt + Right Arrow --> Go forward one step :)

- Win + T will focus on your Windows 7 taskbar - Use left/right arrow to select an app to launch :)
