I asked the ''whirlpool'' forum (megageek) about the brands we have in Lebanon and they said all of the models we have are bull****,they will not be better than speedtouch, all of them will have short range and ADSL drops...
Yeah I saw your post there I was like WTF someone from Lebanon ! hehe i think ur your username was vetegax.

What is your model number I might be able to help.
although you offered to help vegetaleb, I have a similar issue if you could advice, I have thompson st605, (sodetel HDSL 4mbps/2mbps) with 8 static IP pool, the modem is dead (it will not even ping if connected on 100mpbs, whereas on 10mbps it works a bit but internet is very much unstable)

could you recommend a modem which will allow me to use the multiple IP pool while using PPoE, and have access to disable nat and routing of any kind. the setup we are running

Hi, I am not familiar with HDSL but are you sure it's an HDSL modem ? according to http://www.speedguide.net/routers/technicolor-thomson-speedtouch-605-dsl-business-861 it's an ADSL2+ modem.

Did you try a Hard resest after backing up the configurations ?

Yes it is the one, to be honest I never thought about it not being HDSL, I think that's how we have been receiving the service, come to think of it no other modem is mentioned on Sodete's website either.

I have tried Hard Resetting it, but the ping issue remains same, I tried all 4 ports, same outcome, it only becomes bearable when using it at 10mbps fd.

Ok how about a firmware update, tried that ? sorry I am trying to rule out all possibilities because HDSL modems for sale are very limited.

couldn't find any firmware for it, the technicolor website says contact your ISP and honestly I didnt contact the support,

BTW after your post I refreshed myself on HDSL/ADSL, and I think they are giving us ADSL only, as i am using Linksys WAG200G right now and its stable on Multimode Modulation, for basic connectivity,l (no multiple Live Ips and no IPSEC VPN is connectable)

Give me the exact model you have and I'll like you to the latest firmware, do it at your own risk.
Aly wrotel2wal to make you feel better, I have Sodetel and my VPI/VCI are 0/35 :)
Thank you Aly, and offcourse thank you kareem as well :)
OK I am receiving PM questions I'd like to answer here so that it would be a reference
kareem_nasser wroteHey Kareem, you dont need any compliments to what you are doing to the Networking Forums because you know your great and really helping us.

I saw your modem tests, but i want to mention some points that are an issue with my default Speedtouch 546v6 from IDM. Mainly it doesnt forward the ports and these days DMzing doesnt work. I think you already know that the firmwares in for that device are all a pain in the a**, if you can please help me for now sending me the optimal version and please provide a link.

Later i would like to buy a more comfortable ADSL modem with b/g/n standards. Till now i am leaning towards the LinkSys X2000.
Hello Kareem_nasser, well if you want to flash your modem, there has been many improvements over the one you have, the latest generic one is http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-A/Alcatel/Modems/SpeedTouch-546/v6/Firmware/r7-4-3/Generic/ZZQ2AA7.432.bin.7z.php

Once you download the firmware reboot the modem to get a new IP because download is restricted to 1 per IP per day.

Next you download this tool http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-A/Alcatel/Modems/SpeedTouch-546/v6/Wizards/Upgrade/Windows/Germany/SpeedTouch-upgrade-wizard-R4421.zip.php?showFile=

You need it to upload the firmware to the device. You run the software, scan for the Modem, select it and browse for the firwmare, straight forward.
.

Backup the settings/configurations first => once done reboot and restore. happy flashing.

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE THAT COULD HAPPEN WHATEVER THE REASON IS.

I have upgraded my tg585 v8 before even running it for the first time.

Note: The firmware is Premium Demo = Exclusive and has alll features.

let me know how it goes. cheers.
Kareem wroteGive me the exact model you have and I'll like you to the latest firmware, do it at your own risk.
the exact model is SpeedTouch-605m,

Edit: I followed the instruction you mentioned for downloading the firmware and got the files off of modem-help website. will give it a go
My Speedtouch is 585 V6.
Paid for 2mb since October but still at 1mb :(

Hello dude, have you tried upgrading your firmware, if not I'll link you.

Can you also provide a trace when the disconnection happens ? I prefer if the level is set to Debugging.
Kareem,

I downloaded the files but i couldnt do anything to the modem, what i am facing is:
1. I am unable to ping to my modem with any consistency (maximum success rate is around 30%), I have tried hard resetting it several times, have tried to connect on 10mbps f/d, h/d, by default the modem is taking 10mbps if left on auto.

2. I do get the thomson utility to detect it after a few attempts but it stops saying the device has a password (which it dosent have)

thanks for your help!

d3ad, I assume you downloaded this firmware http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-A/Alcatel/Modems/SpeedTouch-605m/v5/Firmware/r7-4-1/Generic/

And this upgrade wizard : http://download.modem-help.co.uk/mfcs-A/Alcatel/Modems/SpeedTouch-605m/v5/Wizards/Setup/Windows/EN/setup-wizard-r7.203-mh-v1.12.7z.php

It is known that for some Speedtouch modems, the upgrade wizard may insist on a username / password. Upgrade can using a tFTP/bootP server (avoids the need for a username/password login, which the Wizard may insist on).
http://download.modem-help.co.uk/utilities/BootP--tFTP-Servers/Jounin/

Give it a try.

I downloaded the tftpd utility but have no clue on how to make it work :), will check it out and get back to u

Thanks for your help!
Kareem, I updated the firmware on my modem mainly due to the frequent disconnects I had been experiencing, and since I have done the upgrade, disconnects have all but disappeared. There is no difference in speed, more an improvement in stability. Not all is great with the firmware though--I used to be able to reboot the modem remotely, but not any more and there are some other quirks too, but nothing major.

A minor inconvenience I guess, but anyone else who has a 2640U, I would recommend the upgrade just for the stability factor alone. And thanks again Kareem....
I don't get it, you can't reboot the modem remotely ? how come ? I can do it either by login in to the modem main page or ssh> reboot , both are working.

What is the driver version reported in the page ?

And I'm not sure if I got it correctly, are you still experiencing disconnections ?
The driver version is RU_1.25--for whatever reason, whenever I try to reboot (like if I hate my IP), it won't let me do it most of the time. It sort of just hangs there, and I have to walk across the other side of house and reboot it. It is like losing a remote control I guess, :) It is not a big deal since the disconnect problem I had been having is gone, at least for now (sorry if I wasn't clear on this part).

As an aside, a Sony laptop was having problems connecting to this wireless signal--after the upgrade, the problem seems to have been solved. No rhyme or reason why only that laptop was having issues with the signal as a Toshiba, HP, BB and HTC had no issues.
I have nothing from the issues you mentioned, have you performed a hardrest after flashing ? btw speed improvement is also dependent on your line stats. Not all modems perform the same on the same line.
I experienced the same problem when i flashed my 2640u to ru_1.25 I couldn't save any new setting or reboot from the browser. The problem is that after you click on reboot or save the router rejects the connection and blocks the ip from accessing it from the browser dunno why, the only solution is by using telnet.
Ok here is a log from today with some login problems!
By the way I finally got 2mb speed yesterday :)
