You can get a [female guitar jack]-to-[male 3.5mm] and put that inside the line-in socket of your sound card. Shouldn't cost more than 1,000 LBP.

i tried that and the sound is really rubbish :s am i doing something wrong? i tried it on my macbook pro btw.
should i plug the guitar to the amp first and then to the conputer? or.could i use my didgitech rp250 instead ( digital sound effects or in lebanon goes by the name of "pedal")?
please help and thanks for your time :D
stock line in inputs generally are shit. That's why getting a audio to usb cable is what u should do. audio to usb means that the analogue to digital (A/D) conversion is done separately from the onboard sound card (which as i said is in 99% of the cases rubbish). it might cost a bit more (20$-ish?) but it definitely is what you want. plus getting one that is made for guitar means that itll take care of impedance matching, and thus u wouldnt need to chain in your "pedal".

You probably will find one at radioshack. If not, try looking in music instruments stores (ones that sell mixers and digital stuff too).

And plus try to get a good one (one that has a good AD converter), because thats the main issue here for quality.

Good luck, and happy jamming.

EDIT: On a different note, if you're serious about getting sound in (and out) of your computer in general, you could consider an entry level audio interface (say one with one guitar in and another mic in) such as this.

I was thinking, is an internal soundcard (desktop) / USB soundcard (laptop) a better and higher quality option than a guitar jack to usb cable? Since I think the USB cable itself will have an integrated soundcard, which will be of entry-level quality.

And about the interface you have specified, doesn't it operate the same as an external soundcard?
It has been my experience that a direct connection into your PC will not give you what you are looking for. You have two options which will work a bit better. 1) a connection from you amp to your computer or 2) using something like this will do the hardware processing before it gets onto your computer (a few friends of mine have this or something similar). Finding a sound card which can do the processing is also an option--it may be the least desirable though.
guitar to usb are not cheap they cost more than 100$. I got a sound card for 400$ and that is mid range so if your not into pro sound quality i say directly use your amp with the sound card you already have or use a microphone.

it is an external sound card (audio interface is just the tech term).. I would advise for an external sound card instead of to audio to usb of course, since it'll be much more than just for guitar, but the advantages of getting something made for guitar is that it'll take care of the impedance hassle and should sound nice even if the a/d converters are built in the plug, that doesnt matter.

Note to all: DO NOT plug in your amp outs to the input of the sound card! unless the amp has a "Line out", which in that case you could connect that. You could easily fry your sound card if you plug in directly from amp out!
thanka for tge help eurabic :D all i need now is a trip to beyrouth XD

employees over radioshack havent even geard of i before :P any othe suggsetions?
if not, i found a usb adapter in maliks bookshop, that has a 3.5mm input socket, will that do the trick?
