Raymond Defends Stallman On Jobs' Issue
Yet another random making a random statement. I'm not surprised, those people are the hippies of technology. I wonder if ERS or RMS will get similar hype after they die.
Not a slight chance.
Not a slight chance.
I agree with RMS
Apple = not open source thus RMS dont like him and i dont like him either...
As if computers and the internet where not enough damage to the human race, here comes the new phones...
am not saying its all bad, but there was time when people use to walk and children use to play outside...
now you have ppl head always down even in public, chating , playing on their stupid phones...
Humanity, long gone...

This statement alone proves you have no idea what RMS stands for (hint: Free/Libre Software ≠ Open Source).I agree with RMS

Computers are not to blame for bad parenting. We could extend your argument to include TV, books, and virtually any engaging activity. Technology is not to blame for parents who don't set their priorities straight. As if computers and the internet where not enough damage to the human race, here comes the new phones...

I went to RMS conference once and he was explaining open source and Free software difference... after that link i remembered that...samer wroteThis statement alone proves you have no idea what RMS stands for (hint: Free/Libre Software ≠ Open Source).I agree with RMS

yeah true parents are so immature...
i believe the key in life is balance....
Comparing Jobs to ESR or RMS based on popularity is ludicrous. You're comparing academic scientists to the face of the most trendy, fashionable, mainstream and commercial company in the world. Did Edsger Dijkstra or Alonzo Church get half of the hype that Jobs did after they died? Is there any doubt that these people defined, influenced and molded modern computing a thousand times more than Apple ever did?xterm wroteI wonder if ERS or RMS will get similar hype after they die.

On the other hand, I'm bored and tired to see every single person in the FOSS community trying to grab the opportunity of Jobs' death to relaunch their campaign. I'm tired of the useless polemics...
Jobs did things his way. From our freedom point of view, he was bad. And now he's gone. Can't we just leave it at that and move on? His successor is going to do the exact same thing anyway ...
Are we really comparing these two to Dijkstra? :-)rahmu wroteComparing Jobs to ESR or RMS based on popularity is ludicrous. Your two scientists fail to understand that Apple, Microsoft and the like are the ones responsible for bringing the "new age" of modern of computing to the world. No matter how much people praise, hug and kiss FOSS it's not what's affecting people's lives on a day to day basis. Those are and I repeat "minorities", we're living in a world ruled by giants, giants like Apple, Microsoft, Oracle, Redhat, Google, Cisco and others. FOSS isn't life changing, it's not life changing to almost 90% of computer users "90%" and those are only the ones grabbed online. Offline that number increases dramatically.
Steve Jobs was the face of Apple. He was popular beyond belief no matter how much he was hated. Bar his efforts within Apple, he brought PIXAR to the world and so many other things.
Let me put it into perspective, I'd rather have Steve Jobs alive, the ass that he was, bringing new things to the world, rather a pointless nothing still preaching about using 256mb laptop and enjoying it.
What do i and almost every other human being on this planet get from RMS? Nothing.
What do i get from Apple? A better E-life.
You're right however, i shouldn't be comparing these two to Steve Jobs, they're not worthy of mentioning :-)
I think you found the core of the issue. What F/OSS needs is more high quality projects, producing software that can make an impact on people. Luckily, this is a community that's really good at making that happen.xterm wroteWhat do i and almost every other human being on this planet get from RMS? Nothing.

People don't suddenly get convinced. It's only when you show them something truly amazing that they start thinking, "Maybe these guys are doing something right."
And just a little nit-pick: our lives (not just digital) are much better because of F/OSS. I'd go so far as to say that F/OSS has improved the world by magnitudes more than Apple. It's just not as well-known, that's all! :)
I now want a wall-size poster of Dijkstra arm-wrestling a goto statement and a sleeve tattoo of the formalism for the simply typed lambda calculus.rahmu wroteDid Edsger Dijkstra or Alonzo Church get half of the hype that Jobs did after they died?
Steve Jobs was a candy man. Of course people would cry when he dies.
However, science is about making people cry primarily when you're alive, and then long after you die.
Forty years from now, who will remember who?
