so if im far from the central will I get better speeds with vdsl modem?
Internet in Lebanon - General Questions
I believe opposite. VDSL beneficial for those who is close.
check the q&a from before it have all information you need on vdsl
The new plans are not fair. Let's say I am subscribed to open speed 100 gb and I am living 2 km away from the CO. Those who are subscribed to the same plan and are living closer to the CO will get higher speeds for exactly the same price. It's not my fault if I am living away from the CO.
For me, I don't care much about the speed, what matters for me is the QUALITY. I want to receive full speed throughout the day especially during peak times at night. The internet is unusable starting from 4 pm until 2 am.

While you have some good points (I am in the same boat with the lower speeds and distance from CO), the issue is that these plans are quota based. So, if you are lucky enough to get 20 mbps, you will blow through your 100 gig quota in 9 hours, while someone living a bit further and getting 2 mbps will take 36 hours. Actually the times are only download, while the quota are both upload and download, so it will actually be less. I wish they could have devised a mechanism to prepay for additional quota at a lower rate instead of paying after the fact which is always more expensive.Adlouni wroteThe new plans are not fair. I still don't get what this stupid drama is about using your quota faster just because you get a faster internet....
its not like I'm gonna go, "yay my internet is faster let me download all the useless things I don't need" <-- this is not gonna happen
I can already watch youtube videos without buffering, so I am not gonna watch more just because it is gonna buffer faster...
I am not gonna spend 3 hours more on facebook just because the pics are loading faster....
honestly this is the dumbest argument I have heard so far, you guys should be more than happy for getting open speeds, and you are NOT EVEN ON THE SAME QUOTAS, the quotas are jumping 3-4 times than what it was, so stop this bullshit argument

Well, on faster internet Youtube will automatically load at 1080p while at 2mbps it will load at 480p maximum. Same for Netflix and most streaming services.Nemesis-301 wroteI still don't get what this stupid drama is about using your quota faster just because you get a faster internet....

Plus, if I'm trying to watch something and someone in the house starts loading something and my video keeps buffering I will just stop it but if the internet was faster I won't care and keep watching.
and this is a bad thing???Georges00 wrotebut if the internet was faster I won't care and keep watching.
I can finally play online games without lag, because somebody is browsing FB while I play, I no longer will have lag spikes
and I'm pretty sure you would notice if a video is at 1080p or 480p and just change it, I know for a fact that we all check the video quality when we watch youtube
what is blowing my mind is that you guys are now complaining about fast speeds
the lebanese have got to be the most hypocritical people I have seen, its impossible to satisfy them

You don't need a huge bandwidth for games though. What you need is no delay and no losses, which the new plans do not guarantee. And it's something I am suffering from a lot at the moment.Nemesis-301 wroteand this is a bad thing???Georges00 wrotebut if the internet was faster I won't care and keep watching.

Edit: I misread your post sorry, I did not see the part about others browsing FB. In that case you are right.
I think you are missing the point. There are apps that change bandwidth use with how fast your connection is and the faster it is, the more they consume. Skype for example---at lower speeds, video calls can us up maybe 150 to 200 meg per hour, when you getting to higher HD quality video, you are looking at easily 10 times that. So, spending the same amount of time skyping will cost you more in bandwidth. Additionally, if you go to any site with videos, the video quality with depend on the speed of your connection--again, you will consume more by going to the same sites for the same time (probably less because you won't be sitting around waiting for the video to buffer).Nemesis-301 wroteI still don't get what this stupid drama is about using your quota faster just because you get a faster internet....

And for people like myself, I hate the TV stations I get, especially for sports, and get streams (in English) off of the internet. Right now with my sub 1 mbps connection, I use about 200 ish meg each hour for a barely watchable stream. Now get me a faster connection, I will be watching it in HD and casting it to my TV and using approximately 2-3 gig per hour. Additionally, I would also like to subscribe to a service like Netflix, but that uses about 3 gig per hour for HD programming and about 7 gig per hour for 4k. If I could, I would subscribe to Bein's connect service, but again, both speed and quota are lacking.
If you are using the internet for browsing and little else, the quotas won't mean too much. However, if you start using the speed of the internet like they do in other countries, then the quotas are painfully lacking at this point in time.
Guys you can limit the bandwidth to 1.5mbps if you don't like better speeds..

Force Skype HD Video is a free program for the Windows operating system that provides you with the means to customize Skype's video settings.

After you have installed the application and started it up, it displays all available Skype accounts on the system in its interface. There you can select one, some or all of them to use one of the quick video profile settings listed below.
Enable HDTV Video setting which enables a video calling resolution of 980x720.
Enable 800x600 Video setting.
Enable Skype HQ Video setting which enables a 640x480 video calling resolution.
Enable Custom Video setting.
Disable Video setting.
For netflix:

and I am pretty sure any streaming you watch lets you customize the video settings, google is your friend!
The new internet plans are better than the actual ones...only if they implement unlimited night or else it's mathematically more expensive
Not everyone is a "geek".
The majority of users don't know about these stuff.
You want parents to download softwares to change skype resolution?

Nemesis--most people on this forum can mess around and change the settings--can your parents or grandparents or the random user do this on their own or think about doing this. Anyhow, if I get a Netflix account, I am watching in HD--really stupid to have an HDTV and watch shows from them in SD. It sort of defeats the purpose on why you have the TV.
or having a 20 mbps speed with only 100 gigs of usage?

And lets not forget the size of games and games updates we need to download! You cannot change these obviously.
I wish a 4mbps unlimited would have been implemented, that would have been the perfect world for everything that we do with the internet.
Or unlimited nights.
And i am sure that these 2 solutions would comfort everyone.
At my end, i will try for one month the 200Gb plan, and limit the YouTube quality at say 480p like now, or 720p max and pay attention to the usage of the internet. And it kills me to do that, because why would i stick to watching 480p videos if i have the ability and speed to watch 1080p and 1440p videos! What a cruel world!
Oh God, here we go again to the days of opening our usage page and checking the usage every hour of every day.
