Currently I live in Sahel Alma, and I'm on a local cable provider "unlimited" 2mbps connection. Although the connection is decent (70-85 ms, and speed boosts between 12 am till 10 am) I have found them to have really aggressive FUP policies. The connection is 2 mbps supposedly, but they throttle the speed down to 110 kB/s all day and down to 50 kB/s between 8 pm and 12 am, and if you use more than 500 mb you will be throttled to 50 kB/s regardless of time of day,and 1 GB brings you down to 25 kB/s until it resets at 12 am, all for 45$.
Now I want to switch to Ogero and get a DSL connection, but when I went to the Central Office and asked for how much my phone line supports in terms of speed they told me 256 kbps but they said that that feasibility study was done a long time ago and that I can apply for a new study to see if it got better, so I did that and they told me to come back in two weeks. And after two weeks I go to the central and ask them about the study, the guy there tells me its just 256 kbps, I ask them what happened to the study again and the guy just insists that it is 256 kbps and the chances are really low that it would have increased.
Now what I need to know is how am I supposed to find out if my line can atleast support 2 mbps so I can go with the unlimited Ogero plan without actually paying all the installment fees and subscription and then finding out the speed the hard way, and what are my options. Also is there anyone living in or next to Sahel Alma that can share their DSL speeds and latency with me? Or atleast in the Jounieh area? Any help could be greatly appreciated
On another note: my neighbor in the building has a 2 mbps subscription from IDM so I asked her if I can do a speedtest on her connection and she was having 900+ms latency to French servers (Marseille) and a speed averaging 20 kB/s, could this mean that the line to my area truly does support a max of 256?
Get some friend or relative who has any DSL connection to bring his router to your house, plug it in and let it boot. Then access the router and check your stats ( SNR margin and Line attenuation). That's how you can know how much your line can support and without bringing yourself headaches from dealing with Ogero's laziness.
